There are 50 product images on the site. Each file size is 3-5 MB. (!) 80% of the site's slowness must be due to this. How can I shrink the images without losing quality?
Is there a question about formats? They are all JPEG. I heard there's a format called WebP but WordPress plugins don't support it. I thought about converting to PNG but PNG is larger. When should PNG be used?

my images were 4mb each too. i compressed them on tinypng dropped to 400kb— quality might look bad at first but it's great once it's live. image sped helped me a lot.
use webp but need fallback for old browsers. no info on plugins but they exist. images get even smaller with batch resize tools.

quick fix: 1) open tinypng (tinypng.com) drag-drop images (max 20 at a time). 2) download compressed files. 3) install wordpress smush plugin so new images are auto-compressed. 4) add lazy loading (wp smush helps with this too). should solve the issue.
understanding image sizes is important: 5mb jpeg means the original photo is very wide (5000px+). web use needs 800-1600px. first reduce resolution (imagemagick: mogrify), then compress. use imagemagick cli or python script for batch operations.
