Is it legal to run Google Ads on a competitor's brand name? Does it have an impact? How do we stop it?

A competitor in the market is running ads on our brand name (in quotes). Is this legal? It means they're stealing our traffic. How do we stop it?

Running ads on a competitor's brand name is generally legal but Google doesn't really like it. If the brand name has a TM (®), you can complain to Google. First register the TM with the Patent Office, then file a complaint.

we faced the same issue bro... since it wasn't TM'd we couldn't do much but best thing is to open a brand campaign and warn them

Correction: I misremembered the figure, it was a bit lower.

Steps: 1. Register a TM 2. Open your own campaign for the brand name on Google Ads 3. Report the competitor's ad 4. Consult a lawyer (if needed)

Google has a 'Trademark Policy'. If there is a registered trademark, Google can stop the competitor. You need to file a claim.

If I understood correctly, you're saying: If you get three different answers on a topic, the question was asked wrong.

If you post the result here, it will help others too.

There are three things to check when doing this. Taking notes for two weeks yields better results than a six-month estimate.

Of course, it varies if your situation is different.

Let me summarize the topic, since several different answers were given. The real issue isn't the number, but what it's based on.

If you have questions, write them; I'll answer as best I can.

I have no experience with advertising on competitor brand name, so I'm asking. Speed is a threshold issue; if you're already fast, making it faster changes nothing.

I'm also curious if anyone does it differently.

Exactly, and not many people know this. A competitor's ranking might come from years of accumulation, not just their content.

Hope this helps.

Let me clarify the technical side. A page with low traffic might be reaching the right people. Look at where sales come from.

I'm also curious if anyone does it differently.

You're right I've been down that road too. like speed is a threshold issue; if you're already fast, making it faster changes nothing.

I'm in the same situation, that's why I'm asking. tbh internal linking is the cheapest and most neglected task.

Just leaving this note it might be useful.

I'd say don't rush. If you don't write this down from the start, it leads to arguments later.

Start with a small trial; don't commit to everything at once. If you have questions, write them; I'll answer as best I can.

I feel the same way. Everything goes well for the first three months; problems arise in the fourth.

You're right. Updating an existing page yields faster results than creating a new one.

Proven by experience.

Saved. The harder it is to reverse a decision the slower you should make it.

ive been down this road, let me tell you then the biggest time-waster for us was not knowing who had the final say.

if I were you I'd go this route.

There's a common mistake people make when doing this. The answer varies greatly by industry; there is no one-size-fits-all rule.

Hasty decisions become decisions you have to fix six months later. This is my opinion, I'm not claiming it's absolute truth.
