Opened a pet shop, a fish died and the customer sued me — how do I handle liability in this business?

ive been running a pet shop for 3 years, selling fish, birds rabbits. one day a customer came in saying 'i bought a fish from you, it lived 3 days then died'... they demanded 500 TL in damages. i asked 'was it disease or water quality?' the customer started rambling.

Then the customer hired a lawyer and i got a letter. it said 'sale of defective goods, seller is liable to the consumer'. i couldnt do anything paid the 500 TL. legally i have zero documentation to back me up.

From now on i wont offer a '3-day guarantee on every animal', but customers complain. how do i legally handle this liability? do i need insurance? btw a contract? documents? anyone can explain?

Business view: If demand > capacity, we can do two things: 1) Raise prices. 2) Increase capacity.

Procedure: First, create a written policy. Have the client sign it. Then enforce it.

To do this job: 1) Ask the client. 2) Get the answer. 3) Do it. Easy.

I'm a small business, let me explain from my side. Don't hesitate to ask; those who don't ask always pay more.

The opposite happened to me, that's why I'm writing. Delaying bad news is the habit that causes the most losses in this job.

This is my opinion, I'm not claiming it's absolute truth.

I feel the same way. Mistaking revenue for cash is the most expensive illusion; trust the bank account.

Just leaving this note, it might be useful.

I think differently. The real issue isn't the number, but what it's based on.

If you have questions, write them; I'll answer as best I can.

Let me summarize the topic, since several different answers were given. Pausing growth to breathe is also a strategy, nobody says that.

The first thing to break as you grow is communication, not the numbers. Proven by experience.

I agree with this. Mistaking revenue for cash is the most expensive illusion; trust the bank account.

If you don't write this down from the start, it leads to arguments later. Hope this helps.

I've been down this road, let me tell you. When making decisions, write down the worst-case scenario too, not just the best.

If you post the result here, it will help others too.

Quick summary for newcomers: Don't hesitate to ask; those who don't ask always pay more.

I'm also curious if anyone does it differently.

Generally correct, but one part is missing. The harder it is to reverse a decision, the slower you should make it.

The reason for failure isn't one big mistake, but the accumulation of small decisions.

You're right. Delaying bad news is the habit that causes the most losses in this job.

Of course, it varies if your situation is different.

You're right, I've been down that road too. If the gap between accounts receivable and accounts payable turnover days is widening, revenue won't save you.

Don't hesitate to ask; those who don't ask always pay more.
