We have traffic but a 0.5% conversion rate, would redesigning the site help or is it a traffic quality issue?

we get 10k visitors a month, we do get sales but only 40-50 orders — conversion rate is 0.4-0.5% then i read that the e-commerce average is 1-3%, so ours is really low. tbh is the site design bad or is it a traffic qualitty issue?

the signup page has too many mndatory fields like 'password' people might be dropping off there. would simplifying the signup form increase conversion? or would changing the traffic source (organic > ads) be better?

i haven't learned how to use funneling in Google Analytics, so I don't know if I'm getting better results than competitor sites.

0.5% conversion rate is low compared to the 1-3% average but it's mid-range. Analyze in this order: 1) Traffic quality — organic > paid. If organic is below 50%, the traffic has low 'searcher intent'. 2) Landing page — is the landing page a 'sales page' or a blog? 3) Signup form — how many mandatory fields are there?

Simplifying the signup form: email + password is enough at first, you can collect other info during payment. Conversion is likely to increase.

Funnel analysis: GA4 > Explore > Funnel. Step 1 (product page) > Step 2 (add to cart) > Step 3 (checkout) > Step 4 (purchase). See where the drop-off is and optimize that page.

Ways to increase conversion rate: 1) Site velocity — test the speed. If it takes 3+ seconds to load 30% of visitors leave. 2) Mobile optimization — users can drop out of checkout on mobile. 3) Trust signals — show reviews, badges, return policy. 4) Checkout — reduce the number of steps (1-step vs 3-step).

Traffic quality: SEO organic traffic has a 3-5% higher conversion rate than ad traffic. But choose your keywords — bring in keywords with 'buy' intent.

our site's conversion was 0.6% three months ago. what we didn't know: the signup form was too complex (first name, last name, 'city', 'which product are you interested in', etc.) visitors were abandoning it halfway and i reduced the form to 2 fields (email + password) then it went up to 1.1%. like collect any other info at checkout.

i also did other things: added an FAQ, showed a 30-day return policy, added customer testimonials... honestly all of it worked together but simplifying the form had the bigggest impact.

Conversion optimization steps: 1) Funnel analysis (GA4 > Conversion path) — find the biggest drop-off point. 2) A/B test (checkout CTA color, number of form fields). 3) Page speed test (Lighthouse). 4) Heatmap tool (Clarity, Hotjar) — see where visitors are clicking. 5) Survey — ask 'why didn't you buy'.

email and password are enough in the form collect details on the payment page... if checkout is long, people leave. tbh shortening the form seems reasonable from my side.

edit: i didn't write anything but i want to add — check site speed first. a fast site increases conversion by 15%.

signup form: email + password. customer: extra info? site: well collect it on the payment page then customer: ok. checkout time reduced by 10 seconds, conversion up by 0.5%. math = keep forms simple.

Good call starting this thread. When making a decision, first look at what data you have on hand.

If rankings stay the same but clicks drop, the issue isn't your page, but the search result appearance. I'm also curious if anyone does it differently.

You're right. A page that answers one question works better than one touching on five topics.

This is my opinion, I'm not claiming it's absolute truth.

Let me summarize what's been said so far. A page with low traffic might be reaching the right people. Look at where sales come from.

If you have questions, write them; I'll answer as best I can.

There's a common mistake people make when doing this. Mistakes made on the low conversion rate side are usually reversible but expensive.

That's all, sorry if I went on too long.

i've been down this road let me tell you but honestly if it's your first time start small; scaling comes later.

i'm also curious if anyone does it differently.

The opposite happened to me, that's why I'm writing. When making a decision, first look at what data you have on hand.

This is exactly what we experienced. When making decisions, write down the worst-case scenario too, not just the best.

You're right. Just because everyone does it doesn't mean it's right.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

It's rare to find an explanation this clear.

Let me summarize what's been said so far. Map listings bring more business than blog posts for most local businesses.
