Unconditional closures during the pandemic caused customer loss for the barber — customers didn't return after reopening

i'm a barber in istanbul. when the pandemic started the gov said 'close', so i closed. doors shut for 3 months, i'm still paying expenses (rent 2500, bills). after 3 months they said 'open' so i opened.

but customers didn't come back. they probably forgot me. i think 30 out of my 50 customers left. i lost money during those 3 months, then suffered even more damage from customer loss.

some barbers did 'home barbering' and registered customers they met. i missed that opportunity. pandemic is over but customer culture has changed. right now i'm doing 'discounts' to attract customers but i'm not making a profit.

bro ive been at it 20 years, heres my advice: dont overthink. just do what you gotta do and go.

Correction: I misremembered the figure, it was a bit lower.

stats: if you hire staff, costs go up 40%, but output can increase by 60%. net: +20%.

if you're struggling, ask other shop owners. they're your best guides. no magic bullet.

start with this structure: explain to the customer 'i'll do it like this', then do it. good luck.

legally, you should have a written contract with the customer in this case. terms must be clear. advice: lawyer.

management perspective: measure capacity, measure demand, if there's a gap find a partner or hire staff.

impossible to solve problems with words alone. go, do it, fail, learn. that's the path.

I was thinking the same thing. The first thing to break as you grow is communication not the numbers.

If you post the result here, it will help others too.

The opposite happened to me, that's why I'm writing. Pausing growth to breathe is also a strategy, nobody says that.

Quick summary for newcomers: Everyone rushing into barber post-pandemic gets stuck at the same point.

I'm also curious if anyone does it differently.

I'd say don't rush. Just because everyone does it doesn't mean it's right.

Hope this helps.

I can't fully agree with this. The answer varies greatly by industry; there is no one-size-fits-all rule.

The reason for failure isn't one big mistake, but the accumulation of small decisions. I'm also curious if anyone does it differently.

There's a common mistake people make when doing this... like when making decisions, write down the worst-case scenario too, not just the best.

When you try to change everything at once, nothing settles. This is my opinion I'm not claiming it's absolute truth.
