Ran my site through a free online SEO audit, got 50 errors back—which ones actually matter?

we sell replacement parts for commercial kitchen equipment in Moscow. two months ago we paid a freelance developer 75,000 ruble to rebuild our sites backend infrastructure. after launching, our search rankings didnt budge at all, so I ran the site through a popular free online SEO audit tool I found.

the report flagged 52 critical and medium-level issues. it's a massive list: missing image alt tags broken H2 hierarchy meta description lengths unminified CSS, broken canonical tags, slow server response times and so on. when I asked the developer, he said most of these tools flag everything as an error just to sell services, but I honestly can't tell what’s a real problem and what's not.

my budget is tight right now, so signing a 40,000 ruble monthly agency retainer isn't an option. out of these 50 issues, which ones directly impact rankings and which are just noise? what can I fix on my own before reaching out to an agency?

Short answer: Most errors flagged by free automated audit tools are minor warnings that have no direct impact on rankings. Your priority should always be indexability, technical accessibility, and structural issues that help search engines understand the page properly; meta description length or a few missing alt tags won't rank-tank your site.

First, focus on technical barriers stopping search bots from crawling and indexing your site. Canonical tag issues on that list are among the most critical; an incorrect canonical tells search engines that the page is a duplicate and shouldn't be indexed. Second, check your robots.txt file to ensure key product categories aren't blocked, and verify server response times. If your server takes over 2 seconds to respond, potential customers will bounce and search crawlers will cut their visits short.

The fixes you can handle yourself right away are basic on-page elements. Make sure every page has exactly one H1 tag containing the primary search term for that product line. As for missing image alt tags, don't stress—you can easily fill those in through your admin dashboard by doing a few main categories each day without touching any code.

The background noise you can safely ignore for now includes meta description lengths and minor warnings like CSS minification. Meta descriptions aren't a direct ranking factor; they only influence click-through rates in search results. Don't waste energy trying to clear all 52 errors—just tackle crawlability, canonicals, and unique H1 tags to start.

Never ignore canonical tag errors. If your product pages clash between HTTP vs HTTPS or www vs non-www versions, search engines won't know which version to index. Also, check for internal links throwing 404 errors and clean them up; broken links burn through crawl budget fast.

The whole point of those free tools is to scare you into buying their premium audit tiers or hiring partner agencies. They flash red alerts over stuff like 'Meta description exceeds 160 characters.' Search engines frequently ignore your meta description anyway and pull their own snippets from the page content so don't waste time on that stuff.

We sorted through 48 errors on a similar report last year. In the first month, we only fixed broken redirects and canonical tags, and organic clicks went up within two weeks. Fixing the remaining 30 image alt tags later produced zero measurable impact on traffic. Put your time where it actually counts.

Follow these three steps: 1) Open the search console and check for index coverage errors, 2) Make sure canonical tags are pointing to the right URL, 3) Clean up broken or 404 links. These are things you can do from the admin panel without touching any code, don't waste your money on an agency.

Your developer is partly right but not entirely. It's true that these tools exaggerate but if they missed basic things like canonical tags, they didn't do their job properly. like if you paid 75.000 ruble, ask them to fix the basic technical redirects; as for entering image descriptions from the panel, you can just do that yourself in the evenings.

dont obsess over those test scores at all. like there are sites with a green 95 getting zero traffic, and sites ranking #1 with an orange 60. what matters is that the site loads fast and pages index properly the rest is just hot air.

How many pages does the site have in total, and have you set up the search console? Instead of relying on automated tools, you need to check the webmaster console provided directly by the search engine. Does the number of indexed pages match the actual page count of your site, and are there any crawl warnings?

Don't let the list intimidate you, check your indexing status in the search console first; you can worry about details like CSS minification down the line.

You're right I've been down that road too. A page that answers one question works better than one touching on five topics.

That's all, sorry if I went on too long.

Thanks a lot I'll try it today. Trying to do this alone is the most expensive way.

A page that answers one question works better than one touching on five topics. If you post the result here it will help others too.

We got stuck at the same point for a while. When making decisions write down the worst-case scenario too, not just the best.

If I were you, I'd go this route.

The discussion got scattered, let me summarize. The answer varies greatly by industry; there is no one-size-fits-all rule.

Good luck with that.

Absolutely. If I were to add anything: If rankings stay the same but clicks drop, the issue isn't your page, but the search result appearance.

If you get three different answers on a topic the question was asked wrong. Hope this helps.

timely topic. if rankings stay the same but clicks drop the issue isn't your page but the search result appearance.

i'm also curious if anyone does it differently.

I went through the same thing. Map listings bring more business than blog posts for most local businesses.

Correct me if I'm wrong.
