People say we need an SEO agency: What do they actually do, and how are they different from a designer?

We supply commercial kitchen equipment and spare parts in Saint Petersburg. About six months ago, we paid 350,000 rubles to a local web design studio to build a new site that included our product catalog and ordering system. The design is sleek, pages load fast, and it works seamlessly on mobile; however, we're getting practically zero potential leads landing on our site from search engines.

A marketing consultant we spoke with said the web studio's job is done and we now need to sit down with an SEO agency. But the web design team had already included a basic optimization clause in our contract. What is an SEO agency, and what exact process do they handle that a web studio doesn't? People are pitching us 70,000 rubles a month; do we actually need this service, and what should we ask for right out of the gate?

A web studio is the contractor who constructs the building; an SEO agency is the team putting up road signs and billboards so customers can actually find it. They're two completely separate fields of expertise.

Short answer: An SEO agency is a specialized firm that handles technical audits, keyword strategy content planning, and authority building to ensure your target audience finds your website on search engines. While web studios make sure the site works properly and looks great, an SEO agency focuses on driving visitors with actual commercial intent to that site.

The basic optimization that web studios put in contracts usually boils down to adding page title tags and submitting a sitemap to search engines. A professional agency, however manages the following: 1) Identifies high-intent commercial search queries in your niche, 2) Structures your product and category hierarchy around search engine crawling logic, 3) Resolves indexing and crawling issues, 4) Builds external digital authority to boost your site's trustworthiness.

Before committing to a budget like 70,000 rubles a month, you should request a one-time, in-depth technical and semantic audit from the agency. That report should clearly outline technical gaps, a competitor breakdown, and which keywords can actually drive revenue. Signing an ongoing retainer only after seeing that roadmap will save you from burning cash.

We only got 12 organic visitors in the first four months after launching our spare parts store. Once we did proper keyword research and fixed the category architecture, our monthly unique visits hit 2,400 within six months, and the incoming inquiries easily paid for the agency fee.

Half the people calling themselves agencies out there are just middle-men emailing automated reports. If they guarantee the number one spot on page one or try to sell you link packages, you're throwing money away, watch out.

We made the exact same mistake. When we asked the designers why no traffic was coming in, they told us their job was just to deliver the site. And they were right. A designer writes code, while a search specialist analyzes what users are actually searching for.

Does the agency's proposal include local search visibility? In the B2B commercial kitchen space Google Maps / local listings and regional optimization can generate orders way faster than broad organic search.

the designer sets up the storefront window the agency brings the foot traffic off the street to look at it. thats all it is. if u have the budget give it a shot just dont expect miracles in month one.

SEO isn't an expense, it's a long-term capital investment. But you need to know what you're measuring when you bring in outside help. Don't set goals around vanity traffic metrics; measure conversion rates on your targeted product pages instead.

We need to make a distinction here. If it's your first time, start small; scaling comes later.

Most time waste accumulates in tasks waiting for approval. This is my opinion, I'm not claiming it's absolute truth.

I agree with this. Start with a small trial; don't commit to everything at once.

Good luck with that.

The opposite happened to me thats why Im writing. Mistakes made on the what is an seo agency side are usually reversible but expensive.

This is my opinion, I'm not claiming it's absolute truth.

It's rare to find an explanation this clear. If you get three different answers on a topic, the question was asked wrong.

Of course, it varies if your situation is different.

exactly and not many people know this but btw most time waste accumulates in tasks waiting for approval.

trying to do this alone is the most expensive way. that's all sorry if I went on too long.

I went through the same thing. When we decide without measuring, we always end up in the same place.

Proven by experience.

There are three things to check when doing this. People defend habits not processes. Resistance comes from there.

The harder it is to reverse a decision the slower you should make it. anyway good luck with that.

My perspective changed after experiencing that. If you get three different answers on a topic, the question was asked wrong.

Hope this helps.

Quick summary for newcomers: Weekly written progress reports are much more useful than asking for dates.

Access credentials should be opened in the company's name, not personal accounts. Of course, it varies if your situation is different.
