I'm a designer who knows HTML but not SEO — what parts of technical SEO can I handle myself, and where do I need help?

ive been working as a freelance UI designer in Valencia for about four years. anyway i build custom designs for clients and slice them into clean semantic HTML CSS and a bit of JavaScript then i charge roughly 1,500 to 2,500 euros per project and up until now my work has strictly focused on visual polish and responsive layouts.

on two recent projects I delivered clients started coming back with feedback like "our technical SEO audit score came back low" or "there are SEO issues in the code." I'm completely comfortable with semantic HTML tags, DOM hierarchy and cross-browser compatibility, but when it comes to search engine optimization, I can't tell which parameters fall under my scope.

how much of technical SEO can a designr who codes handle completely on their own? tbh at what point should I draw the line and tell the client "anything beyond this requires an SEO specialist" or recommend hiring a consultant?

Short answer: With your grasp of HTML and semantic markup, you can completely handle heading hierarchies, meta tags, image optimization, and basic schema markup yourself. But when it comes to server configs, complex indexing issues, crawl budget optimization, and multilingual site architecture, that's where you draw the line and call in a specialist.

As a designer, here's what you can easily handle on your own: 1) Proper semantic structure: one h1 per page, logical h2–h3 nesting, proper placement of article and section tags. 2) Image optimization: explicit width and height attributes on all img tags, modern image formats, and non-empty, descriptive alt text. 3) Core meta tags: Open Graph tags, responsive viewport declarations, and canonical links.

The parts that require specialized expertise and fall outside your scope live at the server and indexing level. For example, server-side 301/302 redirect chains, htaccess or nginx rules, robots.txt directives, render-audit testing for JS-heavy dynamic sites, and hreflang tag setups for international builds should be handed over to a technical SEO specialist.

Set clear boundaries in your client contracts: "delivery of clean, semantic HTML/CSS layouts that meet search engine best practices" is your job; keyword targeting, organic ranking guarantees, or deep server audits belong in a separate consulting scope.

If you know HTML, the main technical metric you need to watch is DOM depth. Nesting 15 layers of pointless divs while styling kills browser rendering and slows down Googlebot crawls. Keeping your tree shallow and clean gives your technical score an instant boost.

A designer's responsibility ends with valid, well-structured code. When a client complains that "we aren't showing up on Google," that's almost always thin content or a botched indexing strategy. Add a line to your proposals stating: "Includes clean, semantic markup; organic search ranking services are strictly out of scope."

On a project I shipped in Madrid last year, I hand-coded local business schema markup in JSON-LD. Just fixing headings and image attributes dropped their Search Console technical error count from 42 straight to zero. Basic HTML hygiene alone fixes 80% of the score.

Add these three checks to your standard pre-delivery checklist: never have more than one h1 per page, make sure all images have descriptive alt text, and don't forget the canonical tag in the head. These will turn most of the automated audits your client runs green.

What tool was your client using when they said "our score came out low"? Was it a performance test measuring page load speed, or search engine index auditing tools? The former is entirely about your CSS and image sizes, while the latter is mostly related to content strategy.

dont worry a front-end dev who writes clean HTML is already doing better work than half the self-proclaimed technical optimization experts out there then just get the semantics right and let someone else worry about the server and link architecture.

It's commendable that you're looking into where your boundaries lie, especially when there are people slapping five h1s on every page coding every button as a div, and then saying "I'm a UI dev SEO isn't my problem." Know your semantic tags, and leave selling the rest to the experts.

We need to take it step by step. Mistakes made on the technical seo html side are usually reversible but expensive.

How did you solve this? Everything goes well for the first three months; problems arise in the fourth.

If you post the result here, it will help others too.

Let me write how it's done in practice. Most time waste accumulates in tasks waiting for approval.

The most overlooked point about technical seo html is this: When making decisions, write down the worst-case scenario too, not just the best.

Updating an existing page yields faster results than creating a new one. This is my opinion, I'm not claiming it's absolute truth.

there is something to watch out for and processes without records never improve, because you dont know what to fix.

i'm also curious if aynone does it differently.

Let me summarize what's been said so far. Everyone rushing into technical seo html gets stuck at the same point.

It's rare to find an explanation this clear. Discussing numbers without verifying the measurement setup is a waste of time.

We got stuck at the same point for a while. Just because everyone does it doesn't mean it's right.

Proven by experience.

I've been down this road, let me tell you. Internal linking is the cheapest and most neglected task.

The real issue isn't the number but what it's based on.
