We run a boutique e-commerce site based in Madrid selling local ceramics and handmade home decor. Our catalog currently has about 45 different products, and we decided to focus on our blog and product descriptions to boost our organic traffic. But when I check the plans for the industry-standard SEO tools, I see subscription fees ranging from 110 to 140 Euro a month. For a small business that's just starting out and trying to protect its profit margins, that’s a pretty heavy expense.

Can we do decent keyword research without paying for these expensive tools on the market, relying solely on what the search engine provides and free methods? Or do we inevitably hit a brick wall at some point? I'd love to hear from anyone with experience on what the limitations are and how you manage the process.

Short answer: Yes, for a boutique catalog of 45 products, you can do very solid keyword research without paid tools. The search engine's own interface often gives you fresher, more direct data on real search intent than third-party software; your main limitation is just not seeing exact monthly search volumes and not being able to bulk-export hundreds of keywords in one click.

To run this process for free, your first step is scraping autocomplete suggestions from the search engine. Open an incognito tab, type in your main product category, and start adding letters to log the auto-suggest patterns people use into a spreadsheet. In step two, grab the 'People also ask' accordions from the search results page and the list of eight related searches at the bottom. These sections directly reveal whether your customer is just researching or ready to buy.

To check the relative popularity of the terms you gathered, you can use the planner in Google's free ad dashboard. Even if you see broad ranges instead of exact figures, it's easy to tell which term gets searched more than another. Finally, connect your site to Search Console and monitor weekly which queries are getting impressions for your early content to keep expanding your list.

The only place this method falls flat is when you're managing thousands of URLs or need to map out a competitor's entire keyword footprint in a single report. At your scale, doing manual intent analysis delivers far higher conversions than paying for estimated algorithm scores.

People new to the industry treat paid tools like a magic wand, but those tools derive most of their data from the search engine's public API pools anyway. With a small catalog, understanding customer language matters way more than chasing vanity metrics. If you sell local handmade goods in Spain, manually checking autocomplete to see if people add regional terms gives you clearer insights than software ever will.

Last year we did zero-budget keyword research for a similar boutique site. We built a 60-page content roadmap purely using the search bar and console data. By month eight, organic orders accounted for 35 percent of our total revenue. That 120 Euro a month you'd spend on tools stays right in your pocket; it's definitely not a must-have in the beginning.

Everyone says you can do it for free but no one factors in the hours it takes. Copying and pasting keywords from the search bar into a sheet one by one will eat up your entire day. If you're spending 10 hours a week on this, your own hourly labor cost ends up being higher than a 120 Euro monthly sub. Fine if you have time to burn, exhausting if you don't.

the related searches at the very bottom of the serp are a goldmine but grab tose phrases, turn them into subheadings in your blog posts and you'll start ranking in two or three weeks. don't waste your money tbh.

Open a spreadsheet tomorrow. Put product category in the first column, search bar autocompletes in the second, and questions from the 'People also ask' box in the third. Just with that combo, you'll easily pull at least 200 razor-sharp content and headline ideas for your 45 products.

do you actually have to launch an active ad campaign and spend money to use the planner in the ad platform, or is just opening an account enough?

Keep these three basic rules in mind when taking the free route: 1) Run every search bar query in an incognito window and in the local language, 2) Don't obsess over search volume numbers; look for whether the keyword signals commercial intent, 3) Turn zero-click, high-impression queries from Search Console into new headlines every week.

Sorry, but this doesnt apply in every case. tbh merge instead of deleting; deleted content doesnt come back.

I'm also curious if anyone does it differently.

Let me summarize what's been said so far. Don't trust anyone who gives guarantees; there are no guarantees in this business.

If I were you, I'd go this route.

I completely agree. When making a decision, first look at what data you have on hand.

my perspective changed after experiencing that... any comment made without a control group is just a guess.

of course it varies if your situation is different.

There are three things to check when doing this. When making decisions write down the worst-case scenario too, not just the best.

This is my opinion, I'm not claiming it's absolute truth.

It's rare to find an explanation this clear. Don't hesitate to ask; those who don't ask always pay more.

If you post the result here, it will help others too.

let me summarize the topic since several different answers were given. discussing numbers without verifying the measurement setup is a waste of time.

of course, it vraies if your situation is different.

The discussion got scattered, let me summarize. Everything goes well for the first three months; problems arise in the fourth.

I'll try it. Updating an existing page yields faster results than creating a new one.

When we decide without measuring, we always end up in the same place. That's all, sorry if I went on too long.

Yes, that's exactly how it is with keyword research. Solutions that work at a small scale collapse when you grow; I learned this late.

The answer varies greatly by industry; there is no one-size-fits-all rule. Good luck with that.
