How do you properly set up international conversion tracking when selling across three countries?

We sell B2B spare parts and equipment across the Gulf region. We serve the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait markets through a single website. Our site runs bilingually in English and Arabic. I mean we get roughly 180–220 quote requests and direct order conversions per month.

But the data in our analytics dashboard is a complete mess. For example a visitor coming from Kuwait can complete a transaction in UAE dirhams or a customer in Riyadh enters from an English page and switches to the Arabic subdomain during checkout which breaks the session and logs the conversion as "direct traffic." On top of that, while ad cost per cart shows as 140 SAR in Saudi Arabia our total revenue report makes zero sense because conversion values on the Kuwait side arent converted to a base currency.

We cant properly compare performance across the three countries and were flying blind when it comes to allocating marketing budget to each market. What is the proper architecture to set up conversion tracking on international, multilingual, and multicurrency sites without breaking your data?

Short answer: The way to prevent corrupted data in international conversion tracking is to preserve the session ID across country or language switches, pin conversions to a base currency in the data layer, and add payment gateways to your referral exclusion list. Until you eliminate broken sessions, calculating country-specific ROAS or channel performance is impossible.

To fix the current mess, you need to implement three critical steps: 1) If language or country switches use a subdomain or a different directory, enable cross-domain tracking in your tag manager. Make sure the client identifier is passed via link parameters when a user moves from the English UI to the Arabic checkout; if you don't do this, the analytics platform treats them as a new user and tags the source as direct traffic. 2) Add your payment provider's domain to the referral exclusion list, otherwise the checkout page gets credit for the conversion instead of the actual campaign.

3) For the multicurrency issue, push two separate values to the data layer: the local currency and its amount, along with your central reporting currency (like SAR or USD). Even if analytics platforms convert currencies automatically, intraday exchange rate fluctuations will cause discrepancies with your ERP data. Capturing the base currency value calculated at your own fixed rate as a custom metric is the safest way to accurately compare order values across countries.

The most common technical cause of broken sessions is cookie domain scope remaining static while browsing between subdomains. Set your cookie domain to auto in your configuration and ensure the session parameter is carried over in the URL when transitioning to the checkout page.

Start fixing it with these three steps: 1) Set up a custom tracking event for currency and language toggle buttons. 2) Verify that the local currency code is being passed dynamically in the purchase event. 3) Create separate country-filtered reporting views in your analytics dashboard for the UAE KSA, and Kuwait.

We made the exact same mistake with our Dubai-based store. Because Kuwaiti dinars and UAE dirhams were lumped into the same cart without conversion, our conversion values were wildly off for an entire month. The day we started passing the fixed USD equivalent in the data layer, we realized our Saudi campaigns were actually unprofitable and restructured our budget.

Most people blame their tags, but the real culprit is usually the site's redirect structure. If you have auto-redirects that force a language or country change based on visitor IP, the page refreshes before the analytics script can fire, wiping out the entire traffic source. Are you using forced IP redirects?

How does your site separate countries? For instance, do you have subdirectories like /ae/ for the UAE or /sa/ for Saudi, or does the content dynamically change on a single URL structure based on the currency selected by the user?

Open real-time debug mode in your analytics dashboard right now. Connect via a Kuwait proxy and place a test order switching from English to Arabic. You'll clearly see whether the session ID changes in the browser console within 5 minutes.

we dealt with the exact same headache between ksa and the uae. our biggest mistake was returning from the payment gateway and having it show up as a referral from the bank. anyway make sure to add payment provider domains to your referral exclusion list otherwise everything shows up as direct or under the banks name.

there's a part I don't understand. a competitor's ranking might come from years of accumulation, not just their content.

hasyt decisions become decisions you have to fix six months later.

Absolutely. If I were to add anything: Don't hesitate to ask; those who don't ask always pay more.

If you post the result here, it will help others too.

I feel the same way. Discussing numbers without verifying the measurement setup is a waste of time.

Of course, it varies if your situation is different.

Let me share my experience. People defend habits, not processes. Resistance comes from there.

Good luck with that.

Generally correct, but one part is missing. The harder it is to reverse a decision, the slower you should make it.

Of course, it varies if your situation is different.

Exactly like that. The biggest time-waster for us was not knowing who had the final say.

Hope this helps.

Saved. Speed is a threshold issue; if you're already fast, making it faster changes nothing.

Taking notes for two weeks yields better results than a six-month estimate. If I were you, I'd go this route.

I think it's hard to be that definitive about international conversion tracking. If rankings stay the same but clicks drop, the issue isn't your page, but the search result appearance.

If you post the result here, it will help others too.

Quick summary for newcomers: The real issue isn't the number, but what it's based on.

Hope this helps.
