Spent 500 € on Instagram ads: lots of clicks, zero sales. Why?

We run a small studio and online shop selling handmade ceramics and home decor in Munich. Our average order value is around 45–60 €. I mean last month, we ran an Instagram ad campaign for the first time spending a total of 500 € over 14 days.

Over the course of the campaign our ads got roughly 850 clicks and profile visits jumped. For creatives, we used short behind-the-scenes videos from the workshop and high-quality product photos. But out of those 850 visitors not a single person placed an order; only 3 people added items to their cart, and all of them dropped off at checkout.

If our CPC looks totally reasonable in Ads Manager why aren't we getting any sales? Is our targeting off, are our prices or the website creating a bottleneck or did we just waste the budget somewhere?

Short answer: If your ads are getting clicks but no sales, the issue isn't the creative. It comes down to audience quality, the website experience, or a lack of trust at checkout. The ad did its job by driving traffic; your site failed to convert that traffic into paying customers.

First, check your landing page match. When someone clicks the ad, do they land directly on the specific product shown in the video, or are they dumped onto the homepage or a generic category page? If visitors aren't taken straight to the exact product, most won't bother searching for it and will bounce within seconds. Also, test your mobile load times—slow mobile pages eat up clicks before the products even render.

The second critical factor is trust and transparency in the German market. Are your legal notice (Impressum), return policy, and shipping costs clearly stated right on the product page? The 3 cart abandonments at checkout usually point to surprise shipping fees at the very end, or missing payment options that German shoppers expect and trust.

Lastly, review your campaign objective. If you set it up for 'Link Clicks' or 'Engagement', the algorithm simply optimizes for accidental mis-taps and cheap traffic with zero purchase intent. You need to rebuild the campaign with a 'Purchases' (Conversions) objective.

Have a friend test your checkout on their phone right now. In Germany, if shoppers don't see invoice payment or standard one-click trusted checkouts, they leave immediately. Plus, even a 4,99 € shipping fee popping up out of nowhere on the final screen will kill the cart; try baking shipping into the product price and offering free shipping instead.

We saw the exact same thing with handmade leather wallets. 3 add-to-carts out of 850 clicks is a dismal 0.35%. A normal e-com store should sit at around 2-3% minimum. So out of 850 clicks, at least 17 to 25 people should've added to cart. The people clicking simply aren't interested in buying.

Make sure your pixel is firing properly. Are 'PageView', 'AddToCart', and 'InitiateCheckout' events triggering correctly? If your pixel isn't collecting data, the algorithm can't identify high-intent users and just serves ads to random people.

50 € ceramics aren't really impulse buys. People like the clip, click through, but won't buy ceramics on the spot from a brand they've never heard of. Expecting immediate direct sales from a single cold ad just isn't realistic.

To salvage your spend, do this: 1) Switch your campaign objective from clicks to conversions. 2) Add behind-the-scenes studio photos and clear delivery estimates right on the product page. 3) Drop mandatory account creation and offer guest checkout. 4) Pin customer reviews in your Instagram highlights.

fell into the same trap. run traffic ads and you just get bots from india or older folks clicking by mistake then i mean if u dont pick conversions u wont get a single order whether u spend 500 euros or 5000 tbh

Dont be discouraged 500 € isnt a catastrophic loss for a first campaign—take it as a learning experience. I mean handmade ceramics sell really well. The product isnt the problem; the ad audience and the trust signals on your site just havent aligned yet.

If your objective is set to 'Traffic', the algorithm only hunts for clicks. To find actual buyers, you have to set it to 'Conversions'.

There is something to watch out for. Speed is a threshold issue; if you're already fast, making it faster changes nothing.

Good luck with that.

My perspective changed after experiencing that. Internal linking is the cheapest and most neglected task.

Let me summarize the topic, since several different answers were given. If rankings stay the same but clicks drop, the issue isn't your page, but the search result appearance.

Most time waste accumulates in tasks waiting for approval.

Let me write how it's done in practice. Merge instead of deleting; deleted content doesn't come back.

Proven by experience.

I agree with this. Hasty decisions become decisions you have to fix six months later.

I partly agree, partly disagree. Solutions that work at a small scale collapse when you grow; I learned this late.

Good luck with that.

I think it's hard to be that definitive about running instagram ads. Processes without records never improve, because you don't know what to fix.
