What's actually missing when opening a free online store if you want to make real sales?

i make handmade ceramic mugs vases, and decorative plates in my small studio in Madrid. up until now, I've only sold my pieces at local craft markets and face-to-face to people I know. i want to start taking orders online now; my initial goal is around 30-40 sales a month. since cash flow is super tight at this stage I can't make any major investments.

when I search online I run into dozens of platforms claiming you can 'build a completely free online store'. but I haven't quite figured out where the catch is. do things change the moment I want to connect my own domain, accept credit card payments or send shipping tracking numbers? for someone starting with zero capital, when and at what stage do the hidden costs suddenly blow up?

Short answer: A completely free online store lets you set up a digital storefront, but you can't run a professional sales operation on it. The moment you want to connect a custom domain, accept card payments without extra commission, and send automated tracking updates, you're hit with either a monthly software subscription or steep transaction fees.

The first hurdle on free e-commerce tiers is the domain. Platforms assign you a subdomain like 'yourstore.servicename.com'. This hurts your organic trust on Google search results and makes customers hesitate at checkout. Want to connect your own domain? They bump you straight to an entry-level paid plan, usually running 15 to 30 Euro a month. On top of that, you have the annual domain registration fee of around 10-15 Euro.

The second critical factor is payment processing. Platforms offering free plans typically take an extra cut of 2 to 5 percent on every successful sale. Stack that on top of the standard gateway or merchant fee (averaging around 1.4 percent + 0.25 Euro per transaction), and a massive slice of every sale goes to the software. If you sell 40 vases at 30 Euro each, that's a monthly turnover of 1200 Euro; the extra fees will quickly surpass the cost of a paid monthly plan.

Finally, there's invoicing and shipping integration. On free tiers, packing slips and tracking numbers rarely go out automatically; you have to email them manually. To save your time, the smartest approach is either setting up an open-source e-commerce plugin on your own hosting from day one or factoring an entry-level paid plan into your initial budget.

I launched my first shop based on that zero-cost promise too. Put up the products, but since I couldn't hook up a custom domain, even my friends were hesitant to click the link. On my first sale, the platform took an extra 3 percent cut and the payment gateway took its slice. At the end of the month, once I tallied up everything deducted from my payout, I realized I would've been better off just paying for a plan from the start.

Here's the exact breakdown from my first year: 12 Euro a year for a domain and 6 Euro a month for basic hosting running an open-source setup. All I paid per transaction was the gateway fee (1.5 percent + 0.18 Euro). If I'd stuck with a free turn-key platform, that extra 3 percent cut on gross sales would have blown roughly 450 Euro down the drain over the year.

Here are the unavoidable expenses you'll face once sales start rolling in: 1) Annual domain fee (10-15 Euro), 2) Payment gateway or card processing fees (1.5-2.5 percent per transaction), 3) Packaging and insurance costs for fragile goods, 4) An automated e-fatura module, which becomes essential as order volume scales up.

You're selling fragile items like ceramics; how are you going to send the customer tracking links and your return policy for damaged goods? Free store notification templates usually can't be customized and get sent with the platform's logo instead of your own brand.

biggest pain on free plans is not being able to see abandoned carts. someone drops a mug in their cart and bounces, u cant even send an automated reminder, all those features are locked behind higher tiers.

edit: fixed a few typos.

If you want zero subscriptions, just throw an open-source store plugin onto WordPress. You'll only pay 4-5 Euro a month for basic hosting. No extra software fees per order and you have complete control over everything.

No company offering free stores is doing it out of charity. If they aren't charging upfront they're either gouging you with transaction fees at checkout or plastering their own ads across your footer. Budgeting zero for infrastructure sends customers a clear signal that you're just fly-by-night.

I have an objection here. Weekly written progress reports are much more useful than asking for dates.

Any unwritten clause becomes a point of disagreement later as both sides remember it differently. If you post the result here, it will help others too.

Just a heads-up. Ask who prepared the quote and who will actually do the work.

People defend habits, not processes. Resistance comes from there. Correct me if I'm wrong.

i've been dealing with this for a long time. hasty decisions become decisions you have to fix six months later.

taking notes for two weeks yields better results than a six-month estimate then if you have questions write them; Ill answer as best I can.

i cant fully agree with this. the harder it is to reverse a decision, the slower you sould make it.

if scope grows either time or budget must grow... there is no third option. proven by experience.

This question comes up often on the forum, so I'll leave a consolidated answer: start with an inventory — what you have, where it's located, and who has access. Every measure taken without an inventory leaves an unseen door open.

I was thinking the same thing. Code without setup documentation isn't yours, even if you have it.

There is something to watch out for. like don't hesitate to ask; those who don't ask always pay more.

This is my opinion I'm not claiming it's absolute truth.
