We run an independent auto repair, brake, and mechanical workshop located near the Strasbourg industrial zone. We've been operating for two years. Whenever searches are done in our area, the same three competitors always hold the top 3 spots in the local pack, while we don't show up unless users zoom in on the map and scroll down.

When looking at the competitors, I don't see a massive difference between us. One has 60 reviews, the other 45; our business profile has 28 5-star reviews. Our address, business hours, and uploaded photos are kept very orderly.

Despite this, what technical and structural factors could be behind us lagging behind these three shops in google local search optimization results? What steps should we take, and in what order of priority, to improve our ranking?

Short answer: Lagging behind your competitors in local search isn't just about review counts; primary category selection, consistency of business details across local directories, and the keywords included in reviews play a decisive role in rankings. To fix your ranking, you need to examine your business profile's category structure and build consistent citations from local sources.

To catch up with the competitors, I recommend following this order of priority: 1) Primary category check: Inspect the source code of the competitors appearing in the top 3 on the map to see their main categories. While you might have selected generic auto repair shop, they might have set a more targeted primary category like auto mechanic or brake shop. The search algorithm gives far higher priority to the primary category than to secondary ones. 2) Local directory consistency: In France's official company registries, local yellow pages, and automotive portals, your business name, full address, and phone number must appear in the exact same format, down to the letter. Formatting differences reduce the search engine's trust in your location. 3) Review content and recency: Just collecting star ratings isn't enough. Ask your customers to specify the service performed when leaving a review. Service-related terms like timing belt replacement or brake service in review texts directly trigger the local search algorithm. Also, explicitly mention Strasbourg and surrounding neighborhoods alongside your services on your website's homepage. Once your profile and website validate each other, the ranking gap will close quickly.

Distance, relevance, and prominence are the three core pillars of local ranking. The distance between the searcher's physical location and your shop is the first criterion. However, you can strengthen your relevance by filling out your profile completely and sending regular local signals.

Have you added local business schema markup to your website? Thanks to this structured data, your address, phone number, and coordinates on your map profile are directly verified by search engine bots, cementing your location accuracy in the map algorithm.

At our suburban auto glass shop, we had 32 reviews and were trailing behind a competitor with 70. When asking customers for reviews, we started asking them to mention their car model and the glass replaced. We got 15 detailed reviews in two months and updated our primary category; now we're sitting at #2 in the local 3-pack.

28 reviews is definitely not low, you have a solid foundation. Just ask every satisfied customer leaving the shop to open your profile link directly via a QR code right as you hand over the invoice. Adding 8-10 new reviews a month will get you to your competitors' level within two months.

Check your competitors' business names. Sometimes businesses violate guidelines by stuffing city or service keywords next to their legal name to get an unfair boost on the map. If there's a name usage violating guidelines, you can submit an edit suggestion right on the map.

Knock these steps out this week: 1) Check off each service in the map profile's service list, 2) Post a brief weekly update via your profile, 3) Reply to all existing reviews in a professional tone while weaving in your service names.

Saved. Everything goes well for the first three months; problems arise in the fourth.

This is my opinion, I'm not claiming it's absolute truth.

There's a trap here, let me mention it. Don't hesitate to ask; those who don't ask always pay more.

i have no experience with google local search optimization, so I'm asking. like speed is a threshold issue; if you're already fast, making it faster changes nothing.

i'm also curious if anyone does it differently.

the answer above hits the nail on the head and start with a small trial; don't commit to everything at once.

Could you elaborate on that? Solutions that work at a small scale collapse when you grow; I learned this late.

Good luck with that.

This is exactly what we experienced. If it's your first time, start small; scaling comes later.

I'd say don't rush. When making decisions, write down the worst-case scenario too, not just the best.

Hope this helps.

If I understood correctly, you're saying: Speed is a threshold issue; if you're already fast, making it faster changes nothing.

The real issue isn't the number, but what it's based on. Proven by experience.
