Handling Google Ads keyword research myself: Which metrics can I actually trust?

We're a small manufacturing shop producing industrial packaging materials... Last month we parted ways with our agency because nearly a third of our 18,000 TL monthly ad spend was being burned on irrelevant search queries... Now I've taken over the Google Ads account myself and am trying to build the structure from scratch.

The data in Keyword Planner completely confused me. Some keywords show monthly search volumes in the thousands, while their estimated bid ranges swing wildly between 4 TL and 45 TL. btw since I'm on a tight budget I can't figure out which metrics to use to filter out the noise.

How realistic are the search volumes and competition levels shown in the dashboard? Which data points can I actually rely on and which ones should I ignore?

Short answer: Average search volume and competition columns in Keyword Planner don't directly correlate with campaign success; the data you should actually rely on is the commercial clarity of search intent and your real-world search terms report once the campaign goes live.

The 'competition' metric in the dashboard doesn't reflect organic SEO difficulty; it indicates the concentration of advertisers bidding on that term. Seeing 'high' in that column doesn't mean the keyword will make you money—it just means the bidding auction is fierce. And because estimated top-of-page bid ranges fluctuate constantly with market dynamics, treat them as a rough baseline rather than a hard ceiling.

Here's how I suggest picking keywords: 1) Instead of broad high-volume terms, focus on phrases of at least three words with clear purchasing intent. 2) Avoid broad match early on; stick with phrase match or exact match to protect your budget. 3) Build a solid negative keyword list before launching by excluding terms related to retail, job listings, and educational queries in your niche.

Forty-eight hours after launching put the Keyword Planner data aside and head straight to your search terms report. That's the only place you'll see the exact queries people actually typed to click on your site.

High search volume keywords are a trap for businesses on tight budgets. People might search 'packing tape' just to look up info, but someone typing 'wholesale custom printed packing tape manufacturer' is ready to buy. Even if search volume is only fifty a month, focus on those specific long-tail queries.

We run on a similar budget. In our first month, we blew 6,000 TL on single-word broad match terms that showed 8,000 monthly searches in the planner, and we got zero conversions. When we pivoted to long-tail keywords with 100-200 monthly searches, we pulled in twenty-two quote requests on the exact same spend.

The volumes in Keyword Planner are rounded twelve-month averages. If your market is seasonal, they can be wildly misleading. Plus, Google has grouped similar variants under single search volumes in recent years, meaning the number you see might not represent that exact term's raw volume.

Here's an easy filter you can run right away: export your data from Keyword Planner into a spreadsheet. Weed out all broad, generic terms with high bid ranges that lack commercial intent. Add the remaining ones under phrase match.

if we all trusted the recommended bids in the interface, we'd have signed over the deed to our shops by now. tbh it says estimated bid is 5 TL then the auction hits and you see 30 TL deducted per click.

Does adding negative keywords cost anything against our budget or is it completely free to filter that way?

edit: fixed a few typos.

Have you set up your conversion tracking properly? More than click costs in the panel, are you able to track the actual cost per form submission or phone call?

check the search terms tab every morning and add irrelevants to negatives immediately literally the only way to save your budget in month one.

Edit: asked below, I wrote the answer in the second message.

I have an objection here. The harder it is to reverse a decision, the slower you should make it.

Hope this helps.

It's rare to find an explanation this clear. Hasty decisions become decisions you have to fix six months later.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

timely topic then anyway strat with a small trial; don't commit to everything at once.

solutions that work at a small scale collapse when you grow; I learned this late. im also curious if anyone does it differently.

Yes, that's exactly how it is with Google Ads keywords. When making a decision, first look at what data you have on hand.

Everyone rushing into Google Ads keywords gets stuck at the same point.

The opposite happened to me, that's why I'm writing. Merge instead of deleting; deleted content doesn't come back.

Good luck with that.

I'd appreciate it if you shared the outcome. Speed is a threshold issue; if you're already fast, making it faster changes nothing.

If I were you, I'd go this route.

Don't miss this: If it's your first time, start small; scaling comes later.

Any comment made without a control group is just a guess.

Let me share what happened to me; it might be useful. The biggest time-waster for us was not knowing who had the final say.

Of course, it varies if your situation is different.
