Facebook ads aren't working: Spent €800 but only got 3 orders, where did we go wrong?

We run a small workshop based in Turin, producing handmade leather wallets and cardholders. Our average order value ranges between €45 and €85. Last month, we allocated a serious ad budget for the first time and spent €800 on Meta targeting all of Italy. The result was a total disappointment: we only managed to get 3 orders.

We set up the campaign with a direct sales objective. For targeting, we picked people aged 25-55 interested in fashion, leathercraft, and gift items. The creatives were professional studio shots on a white background, highlighting free shipping. According to Ads Manager, our cost per click was around €0.47. Roughly 1,700 unique visitors landed on the site, but no more than 8 people even initiated checkout.

Once the budget ran out, we had to turn off the ads. We're getting clicks, but nobody is buying. How can I tell whether the problem is the campaign setup, the targeting, or the website itself?

Short answer: getting only 8 checkouts initiated and 3 orders out of 1,700 clicks shows the main issue lies in the product page experience or a lack of trust, rather than ad targeting. While your CPC of €0.47 is quite healthy, the incoming traffic failing to add to cart points to a disconnect between the ad and the landing page.

To fix this, you need to take these three steps: 1) Remove friction on the product page: Instead of studio photos on white backgrounds, add short videos and real user photos showing the leather's texture, stitching quality, and cards being slid into the wallet. In the Italian market, local delivery times (like 24-48 hours) and trust badges heavily influence buying decisions. 2) Streamline the checkout process: Offering PayPal or popular local digital wallets is essential for Italian consumers; make sure no surprise shipping fees pop up at checkout.

3) Revamp your ad creative: Instead of hyper-narrowing your interests, use broad targeting (Advantage+) and let the algorithm find the right buyers. Ditch the white-backdrop studio shots for authentic, UGC-style vertical videos showing the handmade crafting process. Rather than burning through your budget all at once, test these tweaks with a daily spend of €20.

Install a free session recording tool on your site right away and watch how visitors move their mouse. How far down do they scroll, are they bouncing after reading the shipping policy, or is the add-to-cart button hidden on mobile? The answer is right there in those recordings.

edit: I wrote something wrong above, sorry about that.

I sell similar items at a similar price point. Out of 1,700 visits, you should have gotten at least 50-60 add-to-carts and 15-20 purchases. When we replaced studio shots with 10-second raw phone videos of our craftsman stitching the leather, our conversion rate shot up from 0.4% to 2.1%.

Have you verified your Conversions API and pixel setup? With iOS cookie opt-outs, ad managers often underreport data. Also check your site's mobile speed; if it takes longer than 3 seconds to load on mobile, users bounce before even reaching the cart.

Do you force account creation at checkout? If you don't allow guest checkout, most buyers in Italy will drop off right there. Also, how clearly is your return policy stated on the page?

A €0.47 CPC sounds good, but your audience is likely just misclickers who aren't actually interested. Stacking tons of interests doesn't bring quality traffic anymore. Single-interest campaigns or broad targeting where the creative does the heavy lifting perform way better now.

when we first started we spent €600 and got zero sales. turns out we promised free shipping, but entering a postal code at checkout added €7 for delivery. small technical glitches can ruin your entire ad spend—try placing an order from your phone yourself.

In the handmade leather space, trust is everything. People will think twice before dropping €70 on a wallet from a brand-new store with zero Trustpilot or Google reviews. You definitely need real customer testimonials and behind-the-scenes glimpses of your workshop on the site.

The cheap-looking path usually ends up costing more later. Don't trust anyone who gives guarantees; there are no guarantees in this business.

I completely agree. Updating an existing page yields faster results than creating a new one.

If you have questions write them; I'll answer as best I can.

I went through the same thing two years ago. A competitor's ranking might come from years of accumulation, not just their content.

If you post the result here, it will help others too.

Three different views emerged they all complement each other. Solutions that work at a small scale collapse when you grow; I learned this late.

Speed is a threshold issue; if you're already fast, making it faster changes nothing. tbh hope this helps.

We need to take it step by step. The answer varies greatly by industry; there is no one-size-fits-all rule.

Good luck with that.

If I understood correctly you're saying: If rankings stay the same but clicks drop, the issue isn't your page, but the search result appearance.

This is my opinion, I'm not claiming it's absolute truth.

exactly like that and any unwritten clause becomes a point of disagreement later, as both sies remember it differently.

Exactly like that. People defend habits, not processes. Resistance comes from there.

If you get three different answers on a topic, the question was asked wrong.
