Website ranking check: How do I actually see where we rank on Google?

We run an e-commerce site based in Milan selling custom ceramics and home decor, shipping all across Italy... Over the last three months, we've spent about 2,500 euros revamping our content and technical structure to rank higher on search engines.

The issue is when I search our keywords from our office computer we show up in 2nd or 3rd place on page one. But my business partner in Turin checks on his phone and says we arent even on the first three pages... like i check in incognito mode and get one result, check on mobile data and get an entirely different rank.

How can I check our true ranking objectively and accurately? Which tools should we trust, and how do we avoid these misleading results that vary from person to person?

Short answer: You can't see your true rank by doing manual searches in a browser because search results are dynamically personalized based on physical location, device type, and past search history. For an accurate, unbiased measurement, you need to rely on the search engine's official webmaster dashboard and neutral rank tracking tools that simulate locations.

The first thing you should do is log into the official webmaster tool (Search Console) and check the performance report. This dashboard shows your site's average position for a given keyword. That metric doesn't represent an instant snapshot from a single user; it's the mathematical average of where you appeared to thousands of real users making that search over the last 28 days.

Your browser's incognito mode clears your search history, but it doesn't hide your geographic location based on your IP address. A server in Milan and a mobile cell tower in Turin will generate different local results for the exact same query.

To track your true position consistently: 1) Use professional rank tracking tools that can crawl by country and city. 2) Track desktop and mobile results separately, as mobile indexing follows different rules. 3) Focus on weekly and monthly average trends, not daily fluctuations.

note: I wrote this based on my own experience, it might not apply to everyone.

The discrepancy comes down to data centers and local algorithms. Search engines serve results from the data center closest to the user's IP block. Plus, whether you're on mobile or desktop directly alters the query results. Your partner in Turin is probably seeing results pushed below the local map pack.

We tested this firsthand on our own site. A keyword I thought was #1 based on manual searches turned out to have an actual average position of 6.4 in the official dashboard. If you build your strategy relying solely on what you see on your own screen, you'll burn serious time and money. Always base decisions on the official console.

edit: I wrote something wrong above, sorry about that.

If you absolutely have to check from a browser, at least append location and language parameters to the URL or use free extensions that spoof your geolocation. Even then, it only gives you an instant snapshot, not a reliable ranking report.

Honestly obsessing over whether you're 2nd or 5th for a single keyword is pretty outdated these days. Search intents are so fragmented now that what matters isn't where you stand for one specific query, but how much qualified traffic and how many orders you're pulling in organically.

When your partner searches on mobile do they see a map or local business pack? If your niche triggers local intent, map pack rankings and standard organic rankings diverge completely. What keywords are you testing with?

our team had the exact same argument last month turns out we showed up at the top just because everyone at the office visits the site ten times a day so the algorithm thought it was super relevant to us totally misleading

Last year a client thanked me, saying "we're #1, amazing work," and I was baffled because the dashboard showed us at #8. Turns out he was searching for his own site and clicking it every single day, so the search engine personalized it specifically for him. Since then, I only send clients screenshots straight from the official dashboard report.

Even if you clear your search history, you can't bypass the location factor. The only accurate source of truth is the average performance report provided by the search engine itself.

My perspective changed after experiencing that. The real issue isn't the number but what it's based on.

The cheap-looking path usually ends up costing more later. When making a decision, first look at what data you have on hand.

When you try to change everything at once, nothing settles. Proven by experience.

Let me speak from the other side; I'm on the supplier side. Everyone rushing into website ranking check gets stuck at the same point.

People defend habits, not processes. Resistance comes from there.

Let me write how it's done in practice. Discussing numbers without verifying the measurement setup is a waste of time.

Just a heads-up. Trying to do this alone is the most expensive way.

Most time waste accumulates in tasks waiting for approval. Hope this helps.

We got stuck at the same point for a while. A competitor's ranking might come from years of accumulation, not just their content.

Trying to do this alone is the most expensive way.

I think differently... The answer varies greatly by industry; there is no one-size-fits-all rule.

If you don't write this down from the start, it leads to arguments later. If I were you, I'd go this route.
