We sell used cars in Dortmund, with an average inventory of 40 to 55 vehicles on the lot. anyway up until now we’ve only sold through the major listing portals, but we want to build our own company website to capture direct leads and build brand recognition.

I talked to a local web agency; they quoted 4,800 EUR for a custom build, CMS integration and mobile responsiveness. On the other hand, there are off-the-shelf WordPress themes and dealership templates out there with licenses around 60-90 EUR, and someone I know said they could get it live for 500 EUR.

My question is: for an inventory of 50 vehicles do these premade templates actually hold up, or will we hit a wall with search filters, mobile performance, and syncing inventory with listing portals? honestly how does that massive price difference play out in reality?

Short answer: For an inventory of 50 cars, dropping 4,800 EUR on a custom build right off the bat is unnecessary; a well-optimized premade template is more than enough for this scale. The real make-or-break issue isn't how sleek the design is, but whether vehicle data and photos can sync automatically with the listing portals.

The biggest headache in practice is manually entering cars onto the site one by one. If you have 50 cars and each needs 20 photos, a feature list, and pricing details, you'll easily spend 6 to 8 hours a week just on data entry, depending on your inventory turnover. Without an integration bridge (an API or CSV feed) pulling the cars you upload to listing portals directly onto your site, both a template and a custom design will turn into an operational drag.

The main technical detail to watch with premade templates is filter speed. When visitors filter by make, model, transmission, fuel type, and price range, the page shouldn't do a full reload; results should update instantly. Bloated generic themes packed with unnecessary visual animations run slow on mobile and drive potential buyers away.

My advice is to have a clean, niche-specific dealership template set up for 500-600 EUR, and put the rest of the budget toward an automated inventory sync integration with the portals and high-quality vehicle photography.

The biggest pitfall with ready-made themes is page weight from media. 50 cars times 20 photos is 1,000 images. If the template doesn't automatically compress images and use lazy loading, the site will freeze on mobile devices. Make that a strict requirement upfront.

We have a 35-car lot in Essen. Bought a $75 WordPress automotive theme, and a freelancer friend set it up for 450 EUR. It's been running smoothly for two years. Last month we got 11 solid inquiries through the form on our site, which cut down our reliance on the portals.

Can the person setting up that template for 500 EUR actually handle automated data feeds from the portals? If not, you'll get tired of manually uploading the same car to both the portals and your own site all day and give up updating it within two months. The real issue is synchronization not design.

Open the live demo of the template you're considering on your phone. On a 4G connection, filter by make and mileage. If the results take longer than 1.5 seconds to load, eliminate that theme immediately.

When deciding, verify these three features are included: 1) A sticky WhatsApp or click-to-call button on mobile, 2) A built-in financing calculator on the vehicle detail page, 3) Compliant energy efficiency labeling on vehicle pages.

Someone buying a used car doesn't care about the pixels on your logo; they care if the car is clean, if there's an inspection report and if the photos are sharp. Instead of dropping 4.800 EUR on a custom design, start with a template and keep that cash as working capital.

4800 eur is a totally pointless startup cost for a used car business. tbh just sort it out with a decent theme and spend the leftover money on local google ads you'll sell cars way faster.

Let me share what happened to me; it might be useful. If you dont write this down from the start it leads to arguments later.

I agree with this. Ask who prepared the quote and who will actually do the work.

This is my opinion, I'm not claiming it's absolute truth.

There's one point I'm curious about. Any unwritten clause becomes a point of disagreement later as both sides remember it differently.

I'm also curious if anyone does it differently.

I'm a small business let me explain from my side. The answer varies greatly by industry; there is no one-size-fits-all rule.

Good luck with that.

Just a heads-up. Weekly written progress reports are much more useful than asking for dates.

If I were you, I'd go this route.
