Designing ad creatives myself — what should I look out for?

We run a small studio selling ceramics and home decor products. We manage an average ad budget of 18,000 TL a month. The freelance designer we've been working with has been causing major delays in delivery times and started asking for 12,000 TL a month. To cut costs and speed things up, we want to start creating our own ad creatives in-house.

I've used basic image editing tools before, but I don't really know the strategy behind ad design. Does text overlay density still hurt ad distribution? What should I focus on for square vs. vertical formats? Also, what legal aspects should I watch out for so stock photos or royalty-free resources don't cause headaches later? What core principles should I follow to produce professional-looking ad creatives without tanking conversions?

Short answer: An ad creative isn't a work of art; it's a visual hook designed to stop users mid-scroll in their feed. A winning creative needs a single clear focal point an unmistakable message, and strong contrast that pops on mobile screens.

For sizing, you only need to focus on two core dimensions: 1080x1080 px square for feed posts, and 1080x1920 px vertical for stories and reels. In vertical formats leave about 250 pixels of breathing room at the top and bottom, since UI elements profile icons, and caption fields will cover those spots.

Keep on-image text as minimal as possible. Heavy text blocks covering most of the image hurt delivery performance and kill readability. A punchy headline of four to five words summarizing the offer is enough; leave long product details for the ad copy itself.

On the copyright side, never use images pulled from a web search for commercial campaigns. When pulling from royalty-free stock libraries, double-check commercial use terms or just shoot photos of your products in your studio under natural lighting with your phone. Candid authentic shots you take yourself almost always convert better than polished stock photos.

Keep these three rules in mind before starting: 1) Have only one hero element; don't cram multiple products into the same frame. 2) Ensure readability with high contrast between text and background. 3) Place a clear CTA like 'Shop Now' or 'Claim the Discount' close to the main focal area of the image.

We tested this last month with our handmade leather goods. Instead of a slick studio shot with a pure white background, we posted a simple phone snapshot showing everyday use on a desk. Cost per click dropped from 4.80 TL to 2.60 TL. People want to see the real product, not overproduced agency work.

Designing your own creatives looks like a money saver, but are you factoring in your time? Spending two hours a day on graphic design will hurt your production and order fulfillment. With an 18,000 TL monthly budget making 3-4 solid templates and just swapping out product photos makes way more sense than designing from scratch every time.

Never skip mobile preview when making graphics. Text looks huge while designing on a desktop monitor, but becomes unreadable on a phone screen. The moment you're done, send the visual to your phone and check it in hand; if you can't tell what's being sold within three seconds, scrap it and start over.

Definitely be careful with copyright. Two years ago we got a legal notice from a law firm over a supposedly "free" background image found online. The copyright owner wanted 15,000 TL in damages, and we only settled via mediation by paying 8,000 TL. Since then, we only run photos we take ourselves.

free browser-based template sites will be more than enough. cap your brand fonts at two, one for headings and one for copy. if u use different fonts on every creative your brand image goes down the drain just fyi.

What format does your target audience consume the most? Video formats in stories and vertical feeds get way higher engagement than static images. Are you only planning static graphics or can you also produce short 5-6 second motion clips showing the product being held?

don't be intimidated at all a ceramic workshop is an absolute goldmine for authentic content. i mean even a 3-4 photo collage of kneading clay or pulling pieces from the kiln with the price in a clean font will look warmer than most agency work. best of luck!

You're right, I've been down that road too. Just because everyone does it doesn't mean it's right.

Proven by experience.

This thread is archived. People defend habits, not processes. Resistance comes from there.

We need to make a distinction here. Everyone rushing into designing ad creatives gets stuck at the same point.

When you try to change everything at once, nothing settles. That's all, sorry if I went on too long.

the opposite happened to me, that's why I'm writing then like when you try to change everything at once, nothing settles.

internal linking is the cheapest and most neglected task. if I were you, I'd go this route.

This thread is archived. The real issue isn't the number, but what it's based on.

This is my opinion, I'm not claiming it's absolute truth.

I completely agree. Processes without records never improve because you don't know what to fix.

Of course, it varies if your situation is different.
