We got a proposal for GEO promotion for our local business: Map listings or AI?

We run two dental clinics in Kazan. We decided to allocate an advertising budget to attract more local patients in the city. Last week, an agency pitched us a service called GEO promotion quoting 60,000 rubles a month. Their proposal lumped together map services, local directories, and getting listed in generative AI search engines.

What actually is this GEO promotion thing? Is it just standard local map optimization and local SEO, or a whole new AI-driven search model? As a mid-sized healthcare practice with two clinics, is it worth this kind of budget or are we just looking at a standard package dressed up with fancy buzzwords?

Short answer: In the industry, the term GEO promotion gets used for two different things: first, location-based map and local search optimization; second, Generative Engine Optimization to get recommended by generative AI search engines. For local clinics like yours, the tangible value lies in fully managing map profiles, ranking in the local top three, and collecting reviews from regional patients.

Lately, agencies have been repackaging standard map management with next-gen AI buzzwords to charge higher fees. In reality, when generative AI engines recommend a local clinic, they rely entirely on ratings on map services, user reviews, and verified address information on local websites. In other words, without solid map optimization, you won't magically unlock separate AI visibility.

Before approving a 60,000-ruble monthly budget, make sure the agency outlines concrete deliverables. The proposal should clearly include: claiming and updating profiles for both clinics on search maps, adding specializations and price lists to the listings, maintaining NAP (name, address, phone) consistency across local directories and medical platforms, and establishing a compliant workflow to collect genuine patient reviews. Without these fundamentals in place, all the AI talk is just smoke and mirrors.

Here's how to clear up the confusion: one is geographic map optimization the other is generative engine optimization. For a dental clinic, ninety percent of patients come from local map searches. Your top priority should be completing your map profiles.

We tracked this at our own clinic: 65% of incoming patients called or requested directions directly through map services. The number of people booking an appointment straight from the map button without ever visiting our website was twice that of website leads.

They set up a map listing, post a photo once a week slap an "AI-powered GEO promotion" label on it and ask for 60,000 rubles. You can verify your map profiles yourself for free anyway. Don't sign a contract without seeing a concrete technical action plan.

That budget should justify itself across four deliverables: 1) A full list of doctors and services on your map cards, 2) Perfectly consistent NAP info across medical platforms, 3) A professional response framework for negative reviews, 4) A clear strategy to rank in top positions within map searches.

for a dental clinic in a city like Kazan, map profiles are pure gold. people don't sit around reading long articles when they have a toothache; they look for the closest place with the best rating. focusing on maps is definitely the right move.

tbh i'd put the AI stuff aside for now. honestly just fill out your profiles properly and consistently ask happy patients for reviews everything else naturally follows.

The bottom line is this: 80% of what they call GEO promotion is just solid local map management. AI systems simply pull data from these map listings and local directories to generate their answers anyway. You can't have the latter without the basic map work.

what's the difference between paying for sponsored ads on map services to hit the top spot versus doing this organic GEO work and which one brings in patients faster?

I partly agree, partly disagree. A page that answers one question works better than one touching on five topics.

Just leaving this note, it might be useful.

To get into the details: Just because everyone does it doesn't mean it's right.

I'm also curious if anyone does it differently.

I went through the same thing two years ago... Ranking is the result, search intent is the input... Look at intent first.

The biggest time-waster for us was not knowing who had the final say. Of course it varies if your situation is different.

I can't fully agree with this. Don't hesitate to ask; those who don't ask always pay more.

Good luck with that.

could you elabborate on that? taking notes for two weeks yields better results than a six-month estimate.

any comment made without a control goup is just a guess and tbh hope this helps.

Let me summarize what's been said so far. btw solutions that work at a small scale collapse when you grow; I learned this late.

If you post the result here it will help others too.

I completely agree. Everyone rushing into what is geo promotion gets stuck at the same point.

Taking notes for two weeks yields better results than a six-month estimate. Proven by experience.
