Agency billed ad creative production as a separate line item, what is that exactly?

We provide corporate catering and prepared meal services in the Kazan and Ufa regions. The agency we hired for digital marketing added a separate line item of 45,000 rubles for ad creative production on top of their monthly ad management fee of 80,000 rubles.

We fund the 250,000-ruble media budget directly on the ad platforms, no questions there. But I couldn't quite wrap my head around why creative production wasn't bundled into the campaign management fee, or what I'm actually getting for that money. When I asked the agency, they said copywriting, banner designs, and video adaptations fall under it.

Is it industry standard to bill creative production separately like this? How many variations should a business reasonably expect for 45,000 rubles, and how do I verify that the work is actually being done properly?

Short answer: Ad creative production covers crafting the messaging strategy to catch the target audience's eye, writing ad copy, and designing sets of image and video banners across multiple formats. It is very standard to bill this separately from campaign management, because media buying and creative production are two entirely different skill sets.

An agency's campaign management fee covers targeting, budget allocation, and optimization work inside the ad platforms. Creative production, on the other hand, eats up the hours of graphic designers, copywriters, and motion editors. Some agencies bundle everything into a flat rate, but itemizing the costs works in the client's favor for transparency.

To make sure you get your money's worth, lock down clear deliverable numbers in the contract. For the food and catering industry, they should deliver at least three core concept angles per month, five format sizes for each concept, and two short motion animations or vertical videos tailored for story formats.

When checking if it's fair, look at these three criteria: 1) The designs shouldn't just be Russian text hastily slapped onto stock photos, 2) It should include at least two rounds of revisions, 3) Open-source working files should be handed over to you. If the agency delivers all that, the rate is reasonable for regional market standards.

We work with a similar budget. We pay 40,000 rubles a month for the creative package, and our contract guarantees 6 static banner sets and 2 15-second motion videos each month. If they're delivering less than that, ask them to revise the quote.

Most agencies just pull free food photos from stock sites, slap your logo on top, and invoice you calling it creative production. If they aren't shooting and using real photos of your own kitchen and catering setups, there's zero point in paying that money.

Before you sign off on the payment, clarify these three things with the agency: 1) How many different copy and visual variations will be tested per month? 2) Within how many days will underperforming creatives be swapped out? 3) Will your company hold full copyright and usage rights to all produced assets?

If the quote doesn't include video shooting or editing, 45,000 rubles is too steep just for static visuals. Ask the agency straight up in writing how many vertical videos and how many desktop banners they'll be delivering.

Last year an agency just changed the background color of the same image and billed us for three separate creatives. Campaign performance didn't improve at all. In the end, we built our own photo library hired a freelance designer on an hourly basis, and cut costs in half.

Don't worry about the services being itemized separately, that's actually a good thing. like at least you can see how much is going toward ad optimization and how much toward design. The important thing is that the visuals they deliver fit your brand image.

watch out for legal disclaimers when approving designs in russia if mandatory laebls or notices are missing in food and catering ads they just get rejected.

Is A/B testing included in your contract? In other words, do they run the different variations simultaneously and report on which one brings in cheaper leads?

The discussion got scattered, let me summarize. Ranking is the result, search intent is the input. Look at intent first.

Don't hesitate to ask; those who don't ask always pay more. I'm also curious if anyone does it differently.

I didn't know that. The biggest time-waster for us was not knowing who had the final say.

I went through the same thing. When making a decision, first look at what data you have on hand.

Don't trust anyone who gives guarantees; there are no guarantees in this business. If you have questions, write them; I'll answer as best I can.

There is something to watch out for. Any comment made without a control group is just a guess.

If you post the result here, it will help others too.

I'm a small business, let me explain from my side. Processes without records never improve, because you don't know what to fix.

Of course, it varies if your situation is different.

Quick summary for newcomers: The harder it is to reverse a decision, the slower you should make it.

If rankings stay the same but clicks drop, the issue isn't your page, but the search result appearance.

i completely agree... tbh most time waste accumulates in tasks waiting for approval.

hope this helps.

We experienced almost the exact same thing last year. Merge instead of deleting; deleted content doesn't come back.

I'm also curious if anyone does it differently.
