we run a small workshop in Berlin producing handmade natural cosmetics and soaps. our online store has around 300 products and we ship across the DACH region. so far sales have come entirely from social media and word-of-mouth among friends and family but we now want to start pulling in organic search traffic.

since our budget is very tight, we don't have thousands of euros a month to hire a full-service SEO agency; we'd like to learn the ropes ourselves and roll things out step by step then initially, we can only spare a modest budget of around 500-600 EUR for fixing technical gaps or picking up essential optimization tools.

where should we begin on a site with 300 items? should we spend our time rewriting individual product pages beefing up category pages or focusing on techncial SEO? i'd really appreciate some real-world advice on prioritization and where to focus first.

Short answer: For an e-commerce catalog of 300 products, you should definitely start with your main and subcategory pages, not individual product descriptions. Categories are where you target broader, high-volume search terms; individual product pages should only be prioritized for the top 20-30 bestsellers driving your revenue.

To get the highest return on a tight budget structure your roadmap like this:

1) Build and Optimize Category Architecture: Group your 300 products into 6-10 logical main categories and subcategories if needed. Place target keywords like "natural solid shampoo" or "organic olive oil soap" into category headings (H1). Add 150-200 words of helpful unique copy above or below the product grid. Shoppers generally search for these broader terms rather than specific soap names.

2) Focus on Your Best Sellers: Trying to write unique descriptions for all 300 products at once is a waste of time and will completely drain your motivation. Pick out the top 25 products with the highest sales potential. Make sure their titles clearly include product type, weight, and key ingredients (for example, 'Natural Lavender Face Soap 100g'). Ditch generic manufacturer copy and write original descriptions highlighting ingredients and usage instructions.

3) Basic Technical Hygiene: Don't blow your 500-600 EUR budget on expensive tools; free Google tools are more than enough. Compress all your images convert them to WebP format, and cap their width at 1200 pixels max. Make sure your canonical tags point back to the main product so you avoid duplicate content issues with variants and ensure basic product structured data markup (Schema) is active on your template.

The first quick win you can tackle this week: fix your product image file names. Instead of 'IMG_4821.jpg', rename it to 'natural-lavender-soap.webp' and add the product name to the alt text. Organic traffic from image searches converts surprisingly fast for handmade products.

note: I wrote this based on my own experience, it might not apply to everyone.

The most common technical mistake is with variant pages. If the 50g and 100g versions of the same soap generate separate URLs, definitely point a canonical tag back to the main product. Otherwise, your 300 products turn into 900 thin pages in the eyes of search engines, which tanks your index quality.

SEO is a marathon, but with small catalogs, the target audience is very well-defined. Don't burn yourself out trying to touch all 300 products in one go. Focus on 5 core categories that will drive traffic; as those pages rank higher, internal links will start funneling visitors right to the products.

For our tea shop at a similar scale, we spent the first 3 months solely optimizing 8 main category pages. By month 4, our organic sessions jumped from 220 to 1,400, and 70 percent of incoming orders were items added directly to the cart from category pages.

don't be intimidated at all; soap and natural cosmetics have so much story behind them. honestly even just writing genuiine descriptions about the ingredients and the handmade crafting process gets picked up quickly by search engines for its originality.

imo dont waste the budget on tools... search console shows everything for free anyway. give categories solid german titles, add the volume and intended use to product titles that'll do it.

Don't buy into the generic advice of 'start a blog right away and post 3 times a week.' You're a small team; spending time cleaning up category filters and writing proper product descriptions will drive revenue much faster than blogging.

Are you targeting searches within Germany only, or do you have dedicated shipping pages for Austria and Switzerland too? Delivery times and localized terminology can directly impact CTRs across the DACH region.

We got stuck at the same point for a while. The harder it is to reverse a decision, the slower you should make it.

Good luck with that.

My questions are cleared up, thanks. If you don't write this down from the start, it leads to arguments later.

When we decide without measuring, we always end up in the same place. Of course, it varies if your situation is different.

You're right, I've been down that road too. If you don't write this down from the start, it leads to arguments later.

Trying to do this alone is the most expensive way. If you have questions, write them; I'll answer as best I can.

i'd appreciate it if you shared the outcome. a page that answers one question works better than one touching on five topics.

proccesses without records never improve because you don't know what to fix.. and if you have questions, write them; I'll answer as best I can.

Exactly, and not many people know this. When you try to change everything at once, nothing settles.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

I agree with this. If it's your first time, start small; scaling comes later.

Internal linking is the cheapest and most neglected task. If you post the result here, it will help others too.

I think it's hard to be that definitive about online store seo tips. Mistakes made on the online store seo tips side are usually reversible but expensive.

The answer above hits the nail on the head. When you try to change everything at once, nothing settles.
