I started with "what are Meta ads" — what did I learn in my first 3 months running them for my own business?

I run a small workshop in Bursa making home decor and custom ceramic pieces... I launched my website 6 months ago but nobody visited except friends and family... After watching a few videos, I jumped in wondering "what are Meta ads and how do you run them?" My goal was to sell directly through Instagram and Facebook on my own budget without handing thousands of liras over to big agencies.

The first month, I set a 14,000 TL budget and hit the "boost post" button inside the Instagram app to target broad random audiences. btw the result was a total disaster; I got over 4,000 likes and hundreds of followers but only 2 orders came through the site the entire month. Not giving up, I opened Ads Manager on desktop for month two set up the pixel on my site, and put together dedicated creative sets targeting people interested in "home decor."

By the end of month three, I managed to hit 92,000 TL in revenue from the site against 45,000 TL in total ad spend. Starting from scratch, I burned through a lot of cash, but I also figured out how the whole thing works. While sharing my own journey and rookie mistakes Id also love to hear budget optimization tips from anyone whos walked a similar path.

Short answer: Meta advertising is an auction-based digital ad ecosystem across Facebook, Instagram Messenger, and third-party publisher networks that lets you target users based on demographics, interests, and in-platform behavior. For a small business to stay profitable here, the fundamental rule is to ditch the in-app boost button entirely and focus on conversions using desktop Ads Manager and a properly installed website pixel.

That first-month frustration happens to almost every beginner. Boosting a post optimizes the algorithm solely for engagement (likes, comments, saves); it shows your ad to whoever taps screens the most, not whoever is most likely to buy. If sales are your goal always select "Sales" as your campaign objective in Ads Manager and let the pixel optimize for the "Purchase" event.

The second critical step is ad creative. For aesthetic goods like ceramics raw 15-second videos showing the production process, shaping the clay, or displaying the finished piece naturally in a home setting drive far higher conversions than polished studio shots. Static catalog images alone won't cut it.

Finally, nail down this budget split rule: allocate 70 percent of your spend to cold audiences who don't know you yet, and 30 percent to warm audiences who visited your site or added items to their cart without buying (retargeting). Once that balance is dialed in, your ad costs drop fast.

Congrats, hitting 92k in revenue on 45k spend by month three is seriously impressive for someone starting from scratch. anyway pretty sure no small business escapes the boost post trap early on; weve all basically donated a few thousand lira to that button at least once.

92,000 TL in revenue sounds great, but did you factor in ceramic breakage rates, shipping damage, packaging materials, and workshop overhead? Your ad spend ate up nearly half your gross revenue. If your product margins aren't high, you might actually be breaking even or running at a slight loss.

Set up a quick retargeting campaign for abandoned carts right away. Offer a small discount with a "you left something behind" angle to people who added an item to cart in the last 7 days but didn't check out. Your conversion rate will jump immediately.

Went through the exact same thing two years ago selling leather wallets. Burned 30k lira in the first 2 months without a single sale. Turned out I had targeted the entire country and the audience was way too broad. Once I narrowed the targeting and added free shipping, things started clicking. Sticking with it is key.

switch from ad set budgets to campaign budget optimization in ads manager. let the algorithm funnel the spend to whatever creative is hitting, dont waste time managing budgets manually.

In home textiles, we aim for 3.2 TL in revenue for every 1 TL spent on ads. Your current ratio sits right around 2. If you swap product photos for vertical videos showing the packaging process, you can easily pull your cost per click down from 3.5 TL to around 1.8 TL.

Three clear takeaways for beginners from the OP's story: 1) Never hit the boost button on your phone; use Ads Manager. 2) Never spend budget without the pixel installed and a sales objective selected. 3) Don't just watch revenue—track how much ad costs are eating into your net profit.

Let me summarize what's been said so far. Mistakes made on the what are meta ads side are usually reversible but expensive.

Of course, it varies if your situation is different.

The discussion got scattered, let me summarize. Start with a small trial; don't commit to everything at once.

Just leaving this note, it might be useful.

I'll argue the opposite, don't get mad. When making a decision, first look at what data you have on hand.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Sorry, but this doesn't apply in every case. If you don't write this down from the start, it leads to arguments later.

If you post the result here, it will help others too.

My questions are cleared up, thanks. Everyone rushing into what are meta ads gets stuck at the same point.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Quick summary for newcomers: When making decisions write down the worst-case scenario too not just the best.

Of course it varies if your situation is different.

I'll argue the opposite, don't get mad. When you try to change everything at once, nothing settles.

If I were you, I'd go this route.

My perspective changed after experiencing that. Pausing growth to breathe is also a strategy, nobody says that.

This is my opinion, I'm not claiming it's absolute truth.

My question might sound amateurish, sorry about that. Everything goes well for the first three months; problems arise in the fourth.

If you get three different answers on a topic, the question was asked wrong. If you post the result here, it will help others too.
