The agency recommended Django for our web app—will this lock us in with them?

We want to build a B2B ordering and dealer management platform for wholesalers selling industrial spare parts. We received proposals from two software agencies. One claimed the entire project could be built on a PHP stack, while the other insisted on using Python and the Django web app framework, citing complex database relationships and security.

The second agency quoted 380,000 TL with a 4-month delivery timeline. They mentioned their team is very confident in Python's architecture and data security. However since my technical background is limited, I have some doubts. How widespread is Django in Turkey?

If down the road we choose not to renew our maintenance retainer with this agency or have to part ways, will it be hard to find a freelance Django developer or another agency? What delivery terms should I put in the contract so we don't end up locked in?

Short answer: Using Django itself will not lock you in with an agency. In fact, Django's strict folder structure and standard architectural patterns make handing a project off to another developer far easier than with many custom PHP frameworks. The real vendor lock-in risk lies in how the agency documents their code and handles server configurations, not the tech stack itself.

Django is famous for its "batteries included" philosophy. Core components like user management, DB migrations, role-based permissions, and security protocols adhere to unified conventions right out of the box. Any incoming Python developer won't have to figure out a custom setup from scratch; they'll instantly know where the models are and how routing works thanks to those standards.

To eliminate vendor lock-in risks, ensure these acceptance criteria are written into your contract: 1) The entire codebase must be committed weekly to an enterprise code repository owned by you, not hosted on the agency's private servers. 2) The app must be delivered containerized so a new developer can spin it up locally with a single command. 3) Full inline code documentation and an up-to-date requirements file tracking all third-party dependencies must be mandatory for final sign-off.

The average hourly rate for Python and Django specialists can be slightly higher than general PHP developers on the market. However, for B2B applications with complex database schemas, the built-in admin dashboard and rock-solid security layer easily justify that cost difference.

I've been managing software projects for twenty years: real lock-in doesn't come from programming languages, it comes from messy spaghetti code. If the agency ignores Django's built-in ORM patterns and glues together bizarre arbitrary libraries, whoever you hire next will want to rewrite it from scratch anyway. It's about engineering discipline, not the language.

Ask the agency these three questions in writing during the proposal stage: 1) Will you derive the admin panel from Django's built-in panel or skin it with a custom UI? 2) Will standard REST libraries be used for the API architecture? 3) Will the database schema and test coverage be delivered once the project wraps up? The answers to these questions will determine the future of the project.

We had a similar ordering system built with Django last year. We parted ways with the agency in the sixth month. Finding a new freelance Python dev and onboarding them took just 10 days. Because it followed the standard Django structure, the new dev got the hang of the project in 3 days and started writing new features.

I don't think finding a developer is that effortless tbh. If you look at any job board in Turkey, the pool of PHP devs is many times larger than the Python pool. If the agency drops out tomorrow and your budget is tight, you might struggle to find someone at a reasonable rate.

Make sure to add a clause to the contract stating that source codes, database schemas, and setup scripts must be pushed to a repository of your choice before each progress payment invoice. And before paying the final invoice, allocate a small budget to hire an independent dev to do a code review.

django is a perfect fit for b2b backend projects especially if you have complex tables like orders invoices and ledgers the database layer handles it so cleanly. you won't get locked in don't worry just don't forget to ask for the setup files from day one.

Does the agency's 380.000 TL quote only cover the backend, or will they be using a separate UI library for the frontend? If they are building it monolithically with Django templates, handing it over will be very easy, but if they build a separate single-page application, you will be dependent on two separate tech stacks.

Rest assured, Django is a very safe bet in the enterprise world thanks to its solid community backing. Just explicitly state in your contract that all intellectual property rights and source code ownership unconditionally belong to your company and the rest can be easily sorted out technically.

I can't fully agree with this. Just because everyone does it doesn't mean it's right.

I'm also curious if anyone does it differently.

There are three things to check when doing this. If it's your first time, start small; scaling comes later.

I'm also curious if anyone does it differently.

Let's separate the concepts they're getting mixed up. Taking notes for two weeks yields better results than a six-month estimate.
