Quoted for "e-commerce software" — what is this, and how is it different from turnkey platforms?

We decided to launch a digital sales channel for our family business, which focuses on home textiles and custom-made curtains. A local digital agency we met with quoted us a project and setup fee of 140,000 TL, saying they would develop "custom e-commerce software" for us. Looking online, though, I see ready-made e-commerce packages or open-source systems going for 15,000 to 25,000 TL a year.

What exactly does "e-commerce software" in this quote entail, and how does it differ from turnkey rented cloud platforms? They claim they'll write custom code from scratch, but does building a system from the ground up make sense for such a standard need? If we stop working with this agency down the road, will we be left stranded? Would off-the-shelf platforms fall short because we have our own fabric and measurement options, or are we paying a huge premium for nothing?

Short answer: E-commerce software is the general term for the digital infrastructure that handles product cataloging, cart, checkout, and order management. Building custom software from scratch means high costs, vendor lock-in, and ongoing maintenance overhead unless you have a truly niche, non-standard pricing algorithm.

There are three main types of e-commerce solutions on the market: 1) Turnkey cloud platforms rented on an annual subscription. 2) Popular open-source software self-hosted on your own servers. 3) Custom software that agencies claim to build from scratch. Most projects labeled "custom software" by agencies are just an open-source framework reskinned with their own theme; writing bank integrations and cart logic truly from scratch simply isn't sustainable on a 140,000 TL budget anyway.

In home textiles, variant requirements like length/width calculations and square-meter fabric pricing are quite common. However, these features can easily be handled today via ready-made modules on standard cloud e-commerce platforms or WordPress-based open-source plugins.

The biggest risks of custom software are security vulnerabilities and developer dependency. If you part ways with the agency, no other developer will want to touch that code, and your site could go days without processing payments whenever a bank updates its API. At this stage, renting a turnkey platform and putting your budget into product photography and digital ads rather than software is a much smarter investment.

Three years ago, we fell for a similar pitch and paid 95,000 TL for custom software. The agency tripled their maintenance fee in year two, and nobody else could decipher the codebase, so we couldn't migrate the site. We ended up scrapping everything and switching to a turnkey cloud plan for 22,000 TL a year. No more server headaches, and our monthly sales haven't skipped a beat.

Ask the quoting agency these technical questions: 1) Will full ownership and licensing of the source code be transferred to us? 2) What programming language and database architecture are being used? 3) When banks update their payment protocols, will these patches be applied free of charge? The answers to these usually clear things right up.

Correction: I misremembered the figure, it was a bit lower.

Building software from scratch means you're beta-testing all of its security flaws and bugs on your own paying customers. With turnkey platforms, thousands of stores run on the same system simultaneously, so any bug or vulnerability gets patched centrally within minutes.

you definitely dont need custom software for custom curtain sizing. I mean most turnkey packages on the market already have modules for square meters and pleat calculations. instead of sinking 140k lira there, grab an off-the-shelf system for 20k and dump the remaining 120k into google ads youll make way more money.

Before signing any contract, make sure to ask the agency for 2 different active e-commerce sites they previously built on this exact infrastructure. Test their checkout flow on mobile, check their loading speeds, and give those business owners a call to ask how the agency's tech support really holds up.

An acquaintance of mine in the furniture business went for custom software, saying "it should be unique to us." The project was supposed to be delivered in 2 months, but it took 9. By the time the season ended, the site was still sending out broken order confirmation emails. In the end, they switched to a turnkey platform and started making sales the very same week—a total waste of 9 months and their upfront deposit.

Before making a decision, factor in these costs: 1) Annual server and SSL hosting fees, 2) Annual maintenance and backup contract, 3) Maintenance costs for shipping and virtual POS integrations. With turnkey packages, all of these items are already included in the annual price.

edit: fixed a few typos.

In short: custom software won't speed up your operation; on the contrary, it leaves you completely dependent on a single team whenever a technical issue pops up. Turnkey systems are a much safer and far more cost-effective path to start with.

You're right, I've been down that road too. Most time waste accumulates in tasks waiting for approval.

If you post the result here, it will help others too.

The discussion got scattered, let me summarize. Most time waste accumulates in tasks waiting for approval.

Just leaving this note, it might be useful.

Thanks for posting. Processes without records never improve, because you don't know what to fix.

Mistakes made on the e-commerce software meaning side are usually reversible but expensive. Just leaving this note, it might be useful.

There's a trap here let me mention it. The harder it is to reverse a decision, the slower you should make it.

When we decide without measuring, we always end up in the same place. Just leaving this note it might be useful.

I think differently. If you don't write this down from the start, it leads to arguments later.

We got stuck at the same point for a while. The system lives on after delivery; maintenance is a separate line item.

Correct me if I'm wrong.
