Tried building a mobile app with free AI tools — did it work, and where did I get stuck?

i had this dream of building a local mobile app in Izmir to handle bookings for indoor soccer pitches and personal trainers. since my budget was super tight there was no way I could afford the roughly 250,000 TL development quotes software shops were throwing at me. trusting the "build an app with AI with zero coding knowledge" hype online I decided to jump in myself and tbh i spent three full weeks on this, working late into the night after my day job.

the first week was actually amazing; using free AI tools to generate screen mockups buttons color palettes, and screen transitions went smoothly. btw watching working interfaces pop up as I typed prompts genuinely made me feel like a developer. but by the end of the second week when it came to database integration, user auth SMS verification, and payment gateways, things went completely off the rails.

every time I got the AI to fix a login error on one screen the booking calendar screen that had been working fine would break. it completely lost track of the apps state management and I spent 4 days chasing the exact same error in circles. right now Im stuck with a prototype on my phone that has working screens but zero actual live data flowing into it. has anyone managed to release an actual store-ready product with these free tools, and at what exact tipping point do you have to bring in professional help?

Short answer: While free AI tools can quickly generate visual screens and simple click-through flows, it is virtually impossible to handle database security, user auth, and app store approval processes using these tools alone. Your three weeks of work weren't a waste, though; you can hand over the screens and business logic you built to a professional developer as a visual spec sheet, which will cut down costs significantly.

AI models are great at generating isolated snippets of code but they can't maintain the architectural context of an entire mobile app in memory. As the codebase grows, token limits and the context window fall short; fixing one component inevitably breaks another screen. Especially when it comes to data security encryption, session handling, and background notifications, AI just generates hypothetical code and can't orchestrate true server-side communication.

The exact threshold where you need professional help is the moment user data and money transfers come into play. From here on, your smartest move is to document your working screens with screenshots and flowcharts and take them to a freelance senior developer. Since you won't be paying for design and analysis from scratch, you'll only need them to set up the architecture, database, and app store compliance requirements; that alone cuts initial high-cost quotes by at least half.

Such a familiar feeling. For the first two days, I was totally convinced people were wasting their money on developers. Until I tried hooking up the Google Maps API and user permissions. Turns out designing screens is only 20% of the work; the rest is a massive, invisible pipeline.

edit: typed from phone, sorry for typos.

The root cause of your issue is that AI can't synchronize state management end-to-end. Context windows fill up fast on free models. After the 15th prompt, it forgets the data models you defined at the start and starts making up new variable names on the fly—that's the technical reason behind the crash.

There are 3 main reasons AI tools hit a wall: 1) They can't handle multi-user database concurrency. 2) They can't generate certifications that comply with Google Play and App Store security policies. 3) They can't resolve library version conflicts on their own.

We tried something similar. Built a "so-called" MVP with AI in a month. During testing, 40 users tried booking an appointment at the same time and the server choked, database locked right up. We ended up paying a developer 55.000 TL to rebuild the architecture from scratch, but at least we knew exactly what we wanted.

None of those people on social media claiming "I built an app with AI in 1 hour and make 10k a month" are showing an actual business model. They're all hollow calculator or weather apps. Operational stuff like bookings and payments is way beyond what AI can pull off on its own.

Don't be discouraged, you've actually accomplished something great. Most people can't even get their idea down on paper, and you built an interactive prototype. Now just take a screen recording of these flows, note which button leads where; you've already made the developer's job a third easier.

building a backend with prompts when you don't know code is like walking into an unfamiliar forest with no map. anyway the ui looks great but once servers come into the picture a pro touch is non-negotiable.

AI will 5x a good developer's speed, but it won't let someone who doesn't code build a secure system from scratch. If you don't understand architecture, there's no way you can audit the code coming out of an AI. Don't throw your hard work away, just treat this output as your spec sheet.

My perspective changed after experiencing that. Trying to do this alone is the most expensive way.

Proven by experience.

I have a question dont want to go off-topic though. Processes without records never improve because you dont know what to fix.

If the gap between accounts receivable and accounts payable turnover days is widening revenue won't save you. If you post the result here, it will help others too.

Absolutely. If I were to add anything: If the gap between accounts receivable and accounts payable turnover days is widening, revenue won't save you.

This is my opinion, I'm not claiming it's absolute truth.

The opposite happened to me, that's why I'm writing. Taking notes for two weeks yields better results than a six-month estimate.

I feel the same way. Start with a small trial; don't commit to everything at once.

Let me summarize what's been said so far. When making decisions, write down the worst-case scenario too, not just the best.

This is my opinion, I'm not claiming it's absolute truth.
