Web analytics is showing bot traffic — fake visitors. What should I do to filter them out?

There are observed visitors in Google Analytics but they're all coming from bots. They're wasting server resources. How can I filter them?

How do you distinguish between bots and real users? User agent strings, IP addresses... what's the tech behind it?

Is there a risk of bot traffic showing up in my ads? Are there fake clicks in the ads I'm paying for?

Bot Traffic Filtering: 25-40% of web traffic is bots and malicious scrapers. Filters: 1) User-Agent filtering (legitimate: Chrome, Firefox, Safari; suspicious: unknown string), 2) Behavioral analysis (bot: single action page-exit, real: multiple pages + scroll), 3) Rate limiting (bot: >100 req/sec, real: 1-2 req/sec), 4) IP reputation (known bot nets: Googlebot, Bingbot whitelist, others block), 5) Challenge-response (CAPTCHA), 6) Fingerprinting (JavaScript execution — bots can disable it). Analytics filtering: Google Analytics (Admin → Data Streams → Bot filtering: enable built-in bot list), 3rd party tools (paid SEO tool, paid SEO tool bot traffic detection). Tech: JavaScript tracking (bots often skip), cookie tracking (bots usually don't accept cookies), honeypot links (links hidden from real users, bots click them). Ad fraud prevention: ad networks (Google Ads, Facebook Ads) have built-in protection (fraud score detection), viewability standards (MRC: Media Rating Council). Metrics to track: Bounce rate (high for bots), Avg session duration (low for bots), Pages per session (low for bots), Unique device fingerprints (bots don't have repeat IDs). Map: analytics bot filter toggle, UTM parameters (mark suspicious traffic), IP block lists (robots.txt + WAF rules).

turn on google analytics bot filtering, it's built-in. check user-agents block unknown strings. set up rate limiting in the firewall, block >50 req/sec. there might be click fraud in ads the platform itself filters it...

Bot detection methods: 1) User-Agent parsing (regex: bot, spider, crawler patterns), 2) IP reputation (DNSBL: abuseIPDB queries, local blacklist), 3) Behavioral heuristics (timing: sub-second page views = bot), 4) JavaScript execution (bots usually can't run JS, track JS events), 5) TLS fingerprinting (JA3 fingerprinting: bot patterns differ), 6) Captcha solving analysis (bot-solving services can be detected). WAF rules (ModSecurity): rate limiting (>100 req/min = block), request pattern (rapid sequential paths = bot), POST/GET ratio anomaly. Analytics segmentation: 'Exclude Bots' segment (GA4 feature), compare bot vs. real traffic patterns. Ad fraud indicators: high click-through rate (>10%), low conversion (<0.1%), geographic anomalies (clicks from data center IPs).

turn on bot filtering in analytics. set up firewall rate limiting — more than 50 requests per minute = block. drop unknown user-agents. if there's ad fraud the platform's algorithm catches it, you can get your money back and optimize the ad...

Bot traffic classification: Good bots (search engine crawlers, monitoring — whitelist), Bad bots (scrapers, credential stuffing, DDoS — blacklist), Suspicious (click farms, ad fraud detection). Multi-layered defense: network level (IP filtering, rate limiting), application level (CAPTCHA, behavioral analysis), analytics level (traffic segmentation, anomaly detection). Analytics segmentation: create bot vs. real user segments, analyze separately (bot patterns skew funnel metrics). Ad fraud metrics: click-impression ratio, geographic IP reputation, device fingerprint uniqueness.

I completely agree. When making decisions, write down the worst-case scenario too, not just the best.

If you scold false alarms, nobody will report again. Of course, it varies if your situation is different.

I think it's hard to be that definitive about bot traffic filtering. Payment information changes are never verified through the channel they came from.

This is my opinion, I'm not claiming it's absolute truth.

I agree. Everything goes well for the first three months; problems arise in the fourth.

Processes without records never improve, because you don't know what to fix.

Noted thanks. like most time waste accumulates in tasks waiting for approval.

Trying to do this alone is the most expensive way. btw proven by experience.

Thanks a lot I'll try it today. Taking notes for two weeks yields better results than a six-month estimate.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Let me summarize the topic, since several different answers were given. When you try to change everything at once, nothing settles.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

I'd say don't rush. When making a decision, first look at what data you have on hand.

Of course, it varies if your situation is different.

Let me share what happened to me; it might be useful. like if the notification path is long notifications dont arrive; missing notifications mean delayed incident detection.

If I were you I'd go this route.

To get into the details: Any unwritten clause becomes a point of disagreement later, as both sides remember it differently.

If I were you, I'd go this route.

The most overlooked point about bot traffic filtering is this: The harder it is to reverse a decision, the slower you should make it.

Of course, it varies if your situation is different.

Let me summarize what's been said so far. Everything goes well for the first three months; problems arise in the fourth.

Solutions that work at a small scale collapse when you grow; I learned this late.
