Transferring a Google Business Profile from an ex-partner: Who keeps digital ownership and rights?

Two months ago, my business partner and I officially parted ways after running a renovation and interior design workshop in Cologne for 4 years. We paid out his 30,000 EUR share, and the official business registration (Gewerbe) and bank accounts were transferred to my name. But one critical snag remains: our Google Business Profile was originally set up through my ex-partner's personal Gmail account.

The profile has over 140 genuine customer reviews, and nearly seventy percent of our new work used to come from that search traffic. Even though our separation agreement clearly states that all brand assets of the company are to be transferred to me, my partner hasn't replied to my messages for the past few weeks and keeps stalling on handing over the profile.

How can I officially or forcibly transfer this profile to my business email? Does claiming ownership through Google with official business documents actually work, or do I have to send a formal legal warning letter?

Short answer: Even if the primary owner of the Google Business Profile shows up under your ex-partner's personal account, the legal ownership belongs to the business itself. If the other party refuses to cooperate you can request ownership through the Google dashboard and verify it with your business documents to take over the profile within 3 to 7 days.

First step, search for your business name on Google Maps and click the "Own this business?" or "Claim this business" link under the profile. The system will send an automated email asking the current primary owner to grant you access. Google gives your ex-partner exactly 3 days to respond. Once that window passes without them approving it—or if they simply ignore it—the dashboard will give you the option to verify the profile directly yourself.

During the verification phase they usually ask for a postcard sent to the business address, your official Gewerbeanmeldung document tax office paperwork, or a utility/phone bill in the company's name. In Germany, once you upload documents that match the name on the official chamber of commerce or Gewerbe registry, Google support will drop the old account and hand primary ownership over to your new corporate email.

If your ex-partner deliberately blocks the request by hitting the "Reject" button, you need to have your lawyer send a formal cease-and-desist letter (Abmahnung) right away, using your separation agreement as proof. Since you bought out the business share and acquired all digital assets in the agreement, their action legally constitutes interference with business operations and makes them liable for damages.

Digital assets are the most overlooked item in partnership and separation agreements. Domain names, corporate social accounts, and map listings must be explicitly listed, and transfer credentials should be handed over the minute the agreement is signed. Since you didn't secure primary ownership before paying the buyout money at the notary, you're dealing with an unnecessary hassle now.

When starting the process, make sure to use a corporate Google account tied to your domain, not a personal one. Google's algorithms flag manager requests sharing the same domain name as far more trustworthy, far faster. Also, when filling out the ownership claim form on Google Maps, ensure the phone number matches the one on your Gewerbe exactly.

Shoot your partner a short, direct message today: "I put in a transfer request through Google please click the notification and hand over primary ownership." If he still ghosts you open a ticket with Google support tomorrow morning and attach your business registration. Don't sit on this, he might try changing the profile info.

I wouldn't rely too heavily on the automated transfer button. If the other guy hits "reject" the second the notification lands, Google usually locks up and throws you into an endless loop. Be ready to submit a manual ticket through the Google support form along with your official Gewerbe transfer paperwork.

Ran into the exact same thing last year with our restaurant in Munich. My ex-partner threw a tantrum and refused to share the Gmail password. I went into Google, claimed ownership, and when he didn't respond for three days, Google gave me the postcard verification option. Entered the code from the postcard sent to the shop, and the account was mine instantly. The ex-partner's access got wiped completely.

Under the German Commercial Code, withholding operational company assets after a separation agreement is signed constitutes an unlawful act. Give the other party a written deadline, even if it's not notarized. Stating that you will file for an interim injunction for lost turnover if the block isn't lifted usually gets the job done.

don't stress it bro if you have the shop address and the official paperwork google will hand it over eventually... just go claim ownership on the dashboard, if they stay silent for 3 days you'll get the verification option anyway.

Quick question, if the ex-partner completely deletes the account or marks the business as "permanently closed," do those 140 reviews vanish forever, or can Google restore them from backups?

The discussion got scattered, let me summarize. If it's your first time, start small; scaling comes later.

The cheap-looking path usually ends up costing more later. The answer varies greatly by industry; there is no one-size-fits-all rule.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

I was thinking the same thing. The biggest time-waster for us was not knowing who had the final say.

Looking at it as a process the picture changes. If you get three different answers on a topic, the question was asked wrong.

Don't hesitate to ask; those who don't ask always pay more.

My question might sound amateurish, sorry about that. Solutions that work at a small scale collapse when you grow; I learned this late.

I agree with this. Start with a small trial; don't commit to everything at once.

That's all, sorry if I went on too long.
