How do I wipe saved addresses and location history on Google Maps without leaving a trace?

We have a 6-person team coordinating our field operations and customer deliveries. Over the past two years, we've saved hundreds of customer addresses, custom labels, and routes on Google Maps, using both shared company Gmail accounts and work profiles on the staff's personal phones. Critical customer locations, delivery gate codes, and every single stop our staff made during the day have piled up in the timeline across these accounts.

Two employees left last month, and when we tried to wipe the map history while taking back the devices, we noticed the data wasn't fully deleted. Even after removing labeled places, past routes were still sitting right there in the search history and timeline section. What's worse, this data might have also backed up to the departed employees' personal accounts.

How can we permanently delete these saved addresses, labels, and past routes for both corporate security and customer privacy? What kind of wiping and auditing policy should we put in place for company devices?

Short answer: To completely clear data on Google Maps, deleting labels from the map interface alone is not enough; you must permanently delete the 'Web & App Activity' and 'Timeline' records in the Google Account management console. For company devices, the definitive solution is to wipe the account history and then factory reset the device.

For a permanent cleanup, follow these steps in order: 1) Sign in with the relevant Google account and go to the 'My Google Activity' page. 2) From the left menu, switch to the 'Other activity' tab, open 'Google Maps Timeline' data, and confirm the option to delete all history. 3) Under 'Web & App Activity', clear map search history and route queries for 'All time'. 4) Open the Maps app, go to the 'Saved' tab, and delete all created custom lists one by one.

If the employee used a personal account, it is technically impossible for you to delete this data remotely. Because of this, you should immediately implement a mobile device management policy on corporate devices. Only company-managed email addresses should be signed in on the devices, and the device must be fully wiped upon return.

Lastly, writing critical information like customer gate codes into unencrypted fields like map labels is a serious security vulnerability. Wipe this info from the map immediately and migrate it to an encrypted corporate password manager.

The map interface only strips the visual layer. For database-level deletion, you absolutely have to go to myactivity.google.com, filter by Maps, and run the bulk delete there. Also, if you don't clear the app cache on the device, old addresses will keep popping up as autofill suggestions in the search bar.

Using a shared Gmail account is the first and biggest mistake here. You have no idea who went where or who deleted what. Every employee should have their own corporate email, and the day they leave, their access should be cut off with a single click from the admin console.

Customer locations and entry codes constitute trade secrets and personal data. You should have departing staff sign a device handover protocol and obtain a written undertaking stating that company data is not stored on personal accounts.

If the employee used their personal account, it's too late. You can't force anyone to delete data from their own Google account; they can just open it on their phone at home and look at those addresses whenever they want. A company policy should've been set up from day one.

Don't even waste your time when taking company phones back, just factory reset them straight away. Force a sign-out on all other devices using that shared account then change the main password and 2FA immediately.

check the offline maps section in the app too, sometimes downloaded areas stay in memory and you can even tell the route history from there.

Did all 6 field staff know the exact same password? If so, after those employees left, did you check the company drive and email logs, or just the map?

I was thinking the same thing. The biggest time-waster for us was not knowing who had the final say.

If you post the result here, it will help others too.

The discussion got scattered, let me summarize. If you scold false alarms, nobody will report again.

If I were you, I'd go this route.

There's also a measurement aspect to this. Forgotten test environments are more often the entry point than live systems.

Hope this helps.

Good call starting this thread. When making decisions, write down the worst-case scenario too, not just the best.

If I understood correctly, you're saying: Payment information changes are never verified through the channel they came from.

Hope this helps.

Let me summarize what's been said so far. Don't rely on a single measure; go layer by layer.

Correct me if I'm wrong.
