How much does it cost to build a website, is a 3000 euro budget enough for a small business?

We are a small boutique catering business in Strasbourg catering private events and corporate functions. We have a five-person team and up to now, we've only found clients through word-of-mouth or social media posts. We've decided it's finally time to have a professional website.

We've allocated a total budget of 3,000 euro from the company funds for this project. There's a massive price gap among the local agencies and freelancers I've reached out to for quotes; one freelancer said they could take care of everything for 1,200 euro, while an agency claimed you can't get a proper corporate site built for under 8,000 euro.

Is 3,000 euro a realistic budget for a small service business site under current conditions in France? Can custom design, mobile responsiveness, copywriting, and basic search engine optimization be covered for this price? I'd like to know what's likely to fall outside this scope and what extra costs we might run into down the line.

Short answer: A 3,000 euro budget is more than enough and very reasonable for a standard business portfolio site that doesn't need custom backend code. However, you won't get a full-scope agency package with custom design coded from scratch or professional copywriting at that price; what you can get is a high-quality, polished build customized on top of a solid existing theme.

As for what should be covered within this budget: a fully responsive layout, a basic 5-8 page structure showcasing your menus and services, contact and quote forms, foundational technical SEO (meta titles, sitemap, speed optimization), and legally required cookie consent banners should all be included.

What usually falls outside this scope is professional food photography and copywriting. In catering, visuals make or break your pitch, and using generic stock photos kills credibility instantly; high-quality shoots usually require an additional 400 to 800 euro. Similarly, if you want e-commerce features like online ordering, booking calendars, and payment processing, the price will easily climb past 5,000 euro.

You also need to plan for ongoing hidden costs. Domain and hosting fees usually run between 80 and 200 euro per year. For security, plugin updates, and regular backups, you'll need a technical maintenance arrangement, which typically costs around 50 to 100 euro per month with a freelancer. When signing your contract, always confirm whether the first few months of maintenance are included in the upfront quote.

When getting quotes make sure to ask for a detailed statement of work. The specific pages being built, the number of revision rounds delivery timelines, and how many days of free bug-fixing support are included post-launch should all be explicitly stated in the contract. Otherwise you'll spend 3,000 euro and be left stranded with an unfinished site.

Two years ago in Paris we hired a freelancer for 2,500 euro for our boutique pastry shop. The design and setup were great, but we had to supply all the copy and photos ourselves. Ended up paying an extra 600 euro to a photographer. All in all, we got a super clean showcase site for 3,100 euro.

Agencies asking for 8,000 euro are usually pricing based on the budgets of larger corporate clients. For a 5-person catering company, there's no need to build custom software from scratch. A high-quality build on a common CMS like WordPress will get the job done and then some.

To manage your budget properly, make sure to add these clauses to the contract: 1) CMS training session (at least 1-2 hours). 2) Mobile and tablet responsiveness testing completed. 3) At least 30 days of free technical support guarantee after site delivery. 4) Domain and hosting accounts registered directly under your name.

definitely stay away from anyone asking for 1,200 euros. theyll just set up a premade template in two days leave it completely empty and take off then youll spend twice as much trying to fix it.

If you're in the catering business, the most important part of the website is the visuals. I mean if you allocate 2,200-2,400 euros for the design and spend the remaining 600-800 euros on a good local food photographer, that site will bring you way more clients than you think.

In short, 3,000 euros is plenty to easily build a corporate showcase site. Basic SEO and mobile responsiveness should be included in this price; photoshoots, custom booking software, and annual maintenance should be budgeted separately.

I completely agree. btw the system lives on after delivery; maintenance is a separate line item.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Exactly like that. When making a decision, first look at what data you have on hand.

Good luck with that.

Let me summarize the topic, since several different answers were given. Don't hesitate to ask; those who don't ask always pay more.

the discussion got scattered, let me summarize... if its your first time, start small; scaling comes later.

The discussion got scattered, let me summarize. Just because everyone does it doesn't mean it's right.

Just leaving this note, it might be useful.

I've been dealing with this for a long time. When making decisions, write down the worst-case scenario too not just the best.

Good luck with that.

this thread is archived and tbh solutions that work at a small scale collapse when you grow; I learned this late.

implementing a change reuest process doesn't slow things down it speeds them up.

My perspective changed after experiencing that. When making a decision, first look at what data you have on hand.

If you post the result here, it will help others too.

Good luck with that.
