I graduated from an associate degree in web design and coding; which degree did I transfer to via DGS, and how was the process?

after graduating from a two-year associate degree program in web design and coing I started working as a frontend developer at a small digital agency for minimum wage. i realized early on that my diploma would eventually become a ceiling in this industry and that large corporate firms demand a bachelors degree but working six days a week I decided to prep for the vertical transfer exam (DGS) during evenings and Sundays.

my prep took about seven months. i spent around 4,500 TL back then on book sets and online practice exams. since my quantitative background wasnt great, boosting my basic math scores took up most of my time. in the end, with my DGS score, I got into a foundation universitys Management Information Systems program on a 50% scholarship. during credit transfers, I managed to get two years recognized and started from the third year, but course equivalencies were tougher than I expected.

for folks like me thinking about completing a bachelor's after an associate degree, how do program choices and credit transfer hurdls usually play out? i'd love to hear from others who took a similar path and how it affected their careers.

Short answer: Web design and coding graduates mostly transfer to Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, and Management Information Systems via DGS. When making your choices, don't just look at base scores; pay close attention to each university's credit transfer policy and what year they actually start you in.

When planning, the first step is locking in your math scores because quotas are extremely limited. The exam directly tests speed and problem-solving skills. The second step is choosing your university. Credit transfer committees work differently across foundation and state universities. While some schools count basic programming courses from your associate transcript and place you in year three, some technical universities will start you from year one over minor syllabus discrepancies, only exempting a handful of general electives.

On the career front, an engineering degree gives a clear edge if your goal is corporate software architecture or technical leadership. But if you're eyeing digital product management or business analysis, Management Information Systems strikes a much better balance in terms of curriculum flexibility and the ability to work while studying.

I transferred from the same major to Computer Engineering two years ago. I got into a state university, but they barely accepted any of my database and web courses from my associate degree. Having to start as a freshman was a bummer but it let me properly digest the core math and physics courses from scratch. You really need to be patient.

I got into Software Engineering via DGS in 2022. I studied around 3 hours a day on average, bumping it to 6 hours during the last two months. My average across 45 practice tests was 42 math net score, and I ended up with 39 on the real exam. My ranking was around 1,800. Since state quotas are usually just 2-3 seats, the margin of risk is pretty high.

Before finalizing your preference list, definitely call the relevant department offices at your target universities or download their credit transfer guidelines from their websites. Knowing which courses transfer over beforehand will save you from wasting an extra two years.

Corporate companies aren't as strict about the diploma requirement as they used to be. If your portfolio is strong and you contribute to open source projects, getting industry certifications and a good level of English can sometimes lead to a promotion much faster than spending 2-3 years on DGS. Calculate the time cost carefully.

definitely a much more comfortable department to study in while working in ybs. I mean i know a lot of people who had to quit their agency jobs because of mandatory lab attendance and roll call in engineering.

Completing a bachelor's degree through the Vertical Transfer Exam is a critical requirement for title equivalence in the eyes of corporate companies and technology firms that carry out public tenders. Particularly, severance pay scales and position titles are directly indexed to a four-year bachelor's degree. I find your step very appropriate.

edit: typed from phone, sorry for typos.

Did the courses you took after switching to YBS directly contribute to the work you do at the agency? Or did you go through this process just to complete the diploma to a bachelor's degree? Because software practice and a business-heavy curriculum can sometimes stay very disconnected from each other.

I don't think this advice fits everyone. When we decide without measuring, we always end up in the same place.

I'm also curious if anyone does it differently.

Looking at it as a process, the picture changes. The moment you depend on a single client, you no longer set the price.

When making decisions, write down the worst-case scenario too, not just the best. If I were you, I'd go this route.

You're right, I've been down that road too. People defend habits, not processes. Resistance comes from there.

If you post the result here, it will help others too.

If I understood correctly, you're saying: Cutting your own salary is a temporary tactic; if it lasts more than six months, something will break.

If you have questions, write them; I'll answer as best I can.

I've been dealing with this for a long time. Pausing growth to breathe is also a strategy, nobody says that.

I'm curious too. If the gap between accounts receivable and accounts payable turnover days is widening, revenue won't save you.

Of course, it varies if your situation is different.

The cheap-looking path usually ends up costing more later. Just because everyone does it doesnt mean its right.

We got stuck at the same point for a while. The biggest time-waster for us was not knowing who had the final say.

If I were you I'd go this route.

if I understood correctly you're saying: Second-time founders don't make the same mistaks but find new ones.

taking notes for two weeks yields better results than a six-month estimate.
